Thought Fil has done a decent job patrolling center ice and supporting his wingers thus far at center. Struggled in the dots like a lot of young guys do so that's expected and a growing pain you deal with.

Good timing on his center swings and support on the forecheck.
I noticed the above as well which is huge for a Center as it is the play away from the puck that is most difficult to learn. Not sure why so many are down on his play so far, I've liked what I've seen as he seems way more mature physically and mentally.

I was wondering bore the pre-season if the Rangers would be okay having both Kravtstov and one of the young centers start the season in the AHL. Say for 40 games they get big minutes and develop together, then bring them up together at which point the team can most likely find a team looking for someone like Namestnikov

Feel like this means that one of the group hasn't impressed the coaches and GM.

Really think Howden is getting this spot to show if he can be more than the 4th line guy right now. Still say Andersson > Howden this camp from the games.

Strome getting C reps is probably just to see where he fits in.

Chytil is about to find himself on wing again. If that happens, I can see Kravtsov in Hartford to start.

Considering Chytil is still practicing as center with Kreider on his wing I don't think the plan has changed. Realistically they're giving Howden a chance to center some skilled guys but it's still 2 rookies, one of which is playing his off side and is likely more of a thing to see if he's versatile enough to be swapped to the left.

I think it's pretty much a guarantee that Kravtsov starts in the AHL.

Howden and Lias are less easy to predict though. Neither has come in and grabbed onto a top9 spot with their play, but neither looks out of place against NHL players. I would say one of them starts the season as the 3C with a short leash and the other is either the 4C, or still getting moved around to find something that works.

Perhaps after a month or so, one will end up in Hartford, but I don't think the team will send them down without giving them some regular season games first.

all 3 kid Cs are going to make it. Kravstov and Nieves probably won't.

The logical argument is Chytil has better tools as a winger but the eye test says he has much better presence as a center. At the end of the day, that's probably more important. If he can't improve his ability to receive passes from last year he'd be a negative as a winger anyway.

Yeah, I don't see any justification for not playing Chytil at centre to start the season. The kid looks ready to learn at the top6 level.

These comparisons aren’t helping anyone. ROR had 55 points in the NHL in his year 20 season. Have we even seen a flash of something like that from Lias?

Lias has only played in 49 games total by 20 (131 if he skates in all games this season). ROR had 236 GP by the end of the season you brought up. Slightly unfair comparison in that regard. So here's another, 107 points in his first 236 GP (ROR). After two more years when Lias accrues that many GP, I believe I'll take the bet that he has more points than 107 in that same time frame.

Talking 'bad pick territory' about a 20 yr old no. 7 is rather ridiculous to me.

I wonder if DQ already knows what his plan with Lias is, and is giving Howden another top chance to prove something. In the first preseason game, he was...uh...not good.

This may not strictly be DQ thinking Howden > Lias.
I think he’s just trying different combinations. I mean there’s like 50 centers practicing right now. I don’t think Strome has played center yet. Didn’t Quinn just compliment Andersson?

Would be awesome if our beat reporter could put a sentence together properly. I read this a few times still have no idea what he’s saying. They do all make the team? They have to do x make team? No idea
Same lol.

That 2nd pairing

giphy.gif

applies to the “top” pair as well.

Kravy hasn’t disappointed me but he has tried to do a bit too much too often so far. Nothing wrong with that, it’s how you develop.

But I wouldn’t be surprised if he had a strong push the coming week and a half. We have only iced half NHL teams so far, it’s been pretty messy, in a more stable environment I think he would fit in much better.

OTOH, we won’t be a stable environment when the season starts given how many new faces we have. It’s no harm in him starting in HFD with Shesty.

So what are the PP units tomorrow?
Kakko??
Panarin-Zib-Buch
Trouba

Lemieux
Strome-Lias-Krav
Fox

Not sure I like Zib in that middle position, but can't argue with Panarin taking his spot.
Would we be better off having Panarin and Buch on one unit and Zib and Kakko on the other?

i bet Haley gets an NHL contract before camp starts. if he does not, I will be surprised. he has played many games in a row in preseason to not be given a contract.

I tend to agree it makes more sense to start Kravtsov in the A.

Do we? Because I sure don't.

Howden's shown me nothing outside of a fairly brief PDO streak.

Perhaps... but my point was Lias hasn't shown me much offensive flair. Do I think he's an NHLer? Yes. Time will tell offensively.

I lot of us have Rangers draft bias and feel like he has to put up points to be successful. He'll be equally as successful if he's a 3C, playing hard on every shift, killing penalties, and being a shutdown guy. I have no problem with that.
