These are the guys who are locks right now:

Goal-Henrik Lundqvist

Defense--Jacob Trouba, Brady Skjei, Marc Staal, Tony DeAngelo, Adam Fox

Forward--Mika Zibanejad, Artemi Panarin, Chris Kreider, Kaapo Kakko, Pavel Buchnevich, Jesper Fast, Brendan Lemieux, Ryan Strome, Vladislav Namestnikov

These are guys who still have legit chances to make the team:

Goal--Alexandar Georgiev, Igor Sheshterkin--1 job available.

Defense--Brendan Smith, Libor Hajek, Ryan Lindgren, Yegor Rykov and Tarmo Reunanen. 2 jobs available--but right now it seems more like it's between Smith, Hajek and Lindgren with Rykov working through an injury issue and the word seems to be that Reunanen will head back to Finland to play for Lukko.

Forward--Chytil, Andersson, Howden, Kravtsov, McKegg, Nieves--maybe DiGiuseppe or Lettieri. 4 jobs available.

So the Rangers could get down to say 26-27 players if they chose to right now.

After spending a full season with the Rangers, Chytil and Howden are pretty much locks.

Have to see what Georgiev does in his 2nd tune up for the season, but Shesterkin showed he could be ready for the NHL in that last game. He was flooded with shots and quality shots. He did well against what was mostly the Flyers opening night lineup.

Hoping to see Georgiev get all of tomorrow's game with Hank getting the game Thursday. I'd like to think by then they'll know where everyone is starting and could have Huska get the entire last one, if not split with one of Georgiev or Shesterkin

If this is a true meritocracy reunanen would make this team as of now.

We all know it’s not

And it should not be.

It's not even about a small sample size - it's the fact that participation / performance in preseason games often serves to work on specific aspects of a game and for different players - these aspects are different. That's why when watching preseason game it's not necessary to concentrate on the team's play rather than how individuals do in specific roles. For example, like can Chytil generate offense with higher quality wingers, while for Andersson it is whether he can keep up with the play, prevent or neutralize defensive zone breakdowns?

What should be telling is that every year we see someone looking good in preseason but then completely laying an egg once regular season starts. Still we continue to harp on someone not getting a chance based on a good preseason showing.

I like Filip a lot but right now Howden might be more of a lock than Chytil who has looked woeful in his two preseason games.

I don’t think it really matters regardless.

They were both here for all of last season. It’s a really, really, really tough sell to move them down to the A, especially in Chytils case since he’s broke camp with the team twice already.

they’ll almost certainly move a vet or two before that happens.

Really? I thought Howden brought nothing so far. Even from camp nobody had much to say about him. Chytil looked alright in the second game, had some good chances. Looked overmatched along with absolutely everyone else in his first game.

Here comes the newest blame game on the coaching staff!
This is gonna get more pronounced when the season starts, playing with no defensive structure. With the forwards average age of 24, D-men 25, the blame should fall squarely on the adults teaching the youngsters.

Quinn is really pushing the Chytil-Kreider combo. To the extent Andersson has looked better than Chytil, fans might want to adjust their lineup expectations because it looks like Quinn is giving 2C to Chytil for now.

Strome getting looks at C today after being RW most of camp.

Gotta wonder why Robertson is still here. He was extremely out of his depth in his game. Not surprising given his age and draft position but I’m not sure he has to be up here anymore.

I don’t know how anyone could say Lias has been better than Chytil. Certainly not in the philly game we just watched.

Don’t be surprised if Lias doesn’t make this team off the bat and they go Strome in the middle to start while giving Kravtsov a spot. Although I do believe it would be good for him to start in the A. However that might not be an option depending on what was agreed to by management and his agent before signing his ELC.

That spot they gave him today with two ham and Eggers doesn’t look to good and we can argue it all day here but Howden is beloved by Quinn.

Kakko playing in front of the home crowd is probably just for that reason.

Chytil and Kreider are tied together on team B again.

The Lias vs Filip debate is silly. Both will make it out of camp. The organization has put investment in them already and unlike fringe/bubble players, they are firmly planted with the big club. And training camp is not a meritocratic experience. Life is not going to be fair to the McKeggs, Haleys, and Staals.

they go with Strome in the middle to start while giving Kravtsov a spot.
All indications from the coaches suggest Kravtsov will have a spot in the lineup. They all raved about this kid in camp. What a special talent he was. And having a leg up due to playing pro hockey. He'll start the season. It will be up to him, whether he remains.
