Not even close to the Oilers. How many good established vets did they have? All of their good players were young guys who weren't ready.
All of our good players are young guys who aren't ready.

If we hope and pray that Miller is the 1D of the future, and those prayers are answered, Brady Skjei will be getting murdered in those minutes for FOUR YEARS.

Good thing we sent a memo about trading McDonagh and then settled on a predictably poor return.

Unfortunately you’re going to see a lot of that this season.

It’s also because everyone’s idea of a rebuild is inevitably easier and smoother, because the picture is taken at a 10,000 foot view.

The reality is that even if it’s sucessful, it’s a bumpy road with lots of twists and turns.

Weird time for it. Not like we got dominated today. Outplayed a bit and lost in OT. Not the time for sky is falling posts, particularly during a rebuild.

Feels like KZB were the only forwards that actually had a quality chance on net tonight except for that one shot by Vesey.

Zibanejad, Kreider, Zucc, Shattenkirk, Hank, even Buch are not "young guys who aren't ready". Skjei is played one pairing above where he should be. He's not an 18-year-old playing 30 minutes a night. Even a guy like Spooner is a decent player although the advanced stats don't bear it out. But you do you, you're happier having something to complain about anyway. So you should thank the front office.

So you mean sometimes young players are going to make youthful mistakes, and their development isn’t always a straight arrow up...and sometimes Henke is going to look all of 36-years-old...and the team isn’t going to fully implement Quinn’s system...and that aside from the top line there isn’t enough dependable offensive depth in this lineup? Did not see that coming at all.

But how can the hot takes and emotional responses possibly be wrong?!?!?!?

This process is going to be a long one. I know some people think they’re prepared for it, or think they have it figured out. But it’s going to be a bumpy road.

I’m reminded of Larry Brooks’ comment that it’s one thing to talk about a rebuild, it’s another to live through it.

The game was more one sided than the score indicated, but yeah I don't understand the outrage either.

It was only slightly more one-sided than the score indicated. It's preseason so it's harder to gauge but this game would be in the top half of games played defensively in the last three seasons. The offense 5 on 5 stunk but had a few moments.

The locker room rumor about JT Miller.. We don`t know that and what is fact is that JT Miller had 58 pts last season and he is gone - the return was not optimal when coach Quinn start playing Nam on the 4th line and JT still have a top 6 role. It`s a huge loss if our coach still going to use Nam on that 4th line concerning player value.

We haven't fielded a full lineup. I'm not worried

The defensive zone structure has been a lot easier to watch and probably easier for Henrik to follow. Staal-Shattenkirk though absolutely cannot be a thing.

We talked about this in a thread last week, but there are a lot of people who absolutely feed on the negativity. They’re like bad vibe vampires.

The sky will always be falling, they’ll always be the smartest hockey mind on the planet, despite living a mediocre existence in the career they actually have, and something will always be wrong, or stupid, or a pointless.

And yet they keep coming back.

Why?

Because it’s how they feed. The Internet is a breeding ground for it. Doesn’t matter if it’s sports, or a hobby, or politics, or the most trivial activity on the planet. Some people just live to bitch.

This season is going to be up and down. You know what? Next season probably will as well.

And just because people believe that a proper rebuild should take 2 years, or convince themselves that one wasn’t necessary, it doesn’t change the reality that it’s going to be a journey — and not always a pleasant one.

I’ve seen a lot of rose-colored glasses about this team since last year. People think last year was the bottoming out. The truth is this year is bottoming out. Maybe things upswing after the trade deadline, though I doubt it.

Vlad needs to earn his minutes. He's not going to be given a bigger role just because he was part of a trade involving a "58" point player. He's not producing like he needs to be.

Your top defenseman shouldn't be playing "one pair above" where he should. It's the most important position on the ice. First and second pair are different planets.

If we got a great return for McDonagh, that would be one thing. I still don't understand why we forced him out at gun-point. He's exactly what this rebuild needs. He always could have been traded later when we had a semblance of a replacement anywhere in the organization.

I'm always called out for complaining as if the FO hasn't decided we're going to be terrible for several years just because. I think that's a relevant thing to complain about.

Even if we got Hughes, we'd waste his entire ELC. We're already wasting Zibanejad's fantastic contract.

That's why I told Machinehead that Gorton did him a favor.

This sure is a rookie coach, what the hell did he put on the ice for the OT? Like he has no clue...

I also hear he's driving them too hard at practice, they're exhausted. Save the energy for the games!

Second part seems unlikely imo.

To be fair with the wasting his ELC, what team that’s ever had one of those types of players hasn’t wasted said players ELC?

Anyway it could be a lot worse so quite happy with 1 pts in this pre season game concerning lack of productions from our lines 5 v 5 - so glad that Quinn tried something different in the last period. Flyers tomorrow a different game, and Islanders is playing very well against us as usual.

My expectation is that this year is probably rock bottom, with an upswing next year.

But we have to face a number of truths in order to accept whatever happens in the future.

1. Not every kid is going to make it.

2. Not every trade is going to be a win.

3. For now, most players are not going to be playing in their optimal role.

4. The veteran you like might not be worth what you think they are at this stage in their career.

5. You can’t run a team off a data print out. If it was that simple, everyone would be painting by numbers.

6. Rookies and young players are going to look like dog crap sometimes.

7. The vets you hate are not going anywhere until someone else can somewhat replace them.

8. A young player isn’t suddenly a future all star because of a few good games, or a bust because of a few bad ones.

9. Rebuilding hurts and can be very frustrating. We are not nearly as far along as some want to think.

10. There’s no guarantee that any of this will work. That’s the risk.

McDonagh was a shell of former himself. We'd have to give him a big contract and when the rebuild is over he'll be even more past his prime and earning a ton of money. Are you going to bitch about this from now until eternity?

You bitched left and right for YEARS about how awful McDonagh was after 2014. Don't pretend like you didn't. You just need an excuse to bitch. If we kept him the first poor game he'd have you'd bitch. Frankly, that's your hobby. Other than praising Kreider you bitch about literally everything. When we trade one of the people that you bitch about the most you bitch about THAT.
