Your top defenseman shouldn't be playing "one pair above" where he should. It's the most important position on the ice. First and second pair are different planets.

If we got a great return for McDonagh, that would be one thing. I still don't understand why we forced him out at gun-point. He's exactly what this rebuild needs. He always could have been traded later when we had a semblance of a replacement anywhere in the organization.

I'm always called out for complaining as if the FO hasn't decided we're going to be terrible for several years just because. I think that's a relevant thing to complain about.

Even if we got Hughes, we'd waste his entire ELC. We're already wasting Zibanejad's fantastic contract.

McD is not the answer to this team, nor does the painfully obvious direction of his career change the trajectory of this team.

He wasn’t the answer last year, he isn’t this year, and he wouldn’t be the answer 3 years from now. And that’s the reality, even if the Rangers decided to go down that rabbit hole into the roaring 2020s.

My expectation is that this year is probably rock bottom, with an upswing next year.

But we have to face a number of truths in order to accept whatever happens in the future.

1. Not every kid is going to make it.

2. Not every trade is going to be a win.

3. For now, most players are not going to be playing in their optimal role.

4. The veteran you like might not be worth what you think they are at this stage in their career.

5. You can’t run a team off a data print out. If it was that simple, everyone would be painting by numbers.

6. Rookies and young players are going to look like dog crap sometimes.

7. The vets you hate are going anywhere until someone else can somewhat replace them.

8. A young player isn’t suddenly a future all star because of a few good games, or a bust because of a few bad ones.

9. Rebuilding hurts and can be very frustrating. We are not nearly as far along as some want to think.

10. There’s no guarantee that any of this will work. That’s the risk.

Could not say it better. And you would think people would remember these things. We went through it with Kreider and Miller. They were penciled into the lineup and then didn’t immediately produce. But, according to some, Andersson and Chytil will make this team better than last year’s team.

People are delusional if they think this thing is over in 3 years. Zibanejad will emerge as a legit 1C this year and be gone before this team is close to competing.

I think they'll finish somewhere around where they did last year maybe a little worse. I don't think they're making the playoffs or anything, but the Oilers of a few years ago they're not.

McDonagh was a shell of former himself. We'd have to give him a big contract and when the rebuild is over he'll be even more past his prime and earning a ton of money. Are you going to ***** about this from now until eternity?

You *****ed left and right for YEARS about how awful McDonagh was after 2014. Don't pretend like you didn't. You just need an excuse to *****. If we kept him the first poor game he'd have you'd *****. Frankly, that's your hobby. Other than praising Kreider you ***** about literally everything. When we trade one of the people that you ***** about the most you ***** about THAT.
I posted left and right and up and down that we should keep McDonagh. Don't bullshit me.

We will likely sign a player or two between now and then.

The 12 forwards had a total of 14 shots on goal, 8 of them by the KZB line. Five forwards had none. The six D had 10 shots on goal.

Something is seriously wrong here

Nobody can honestly say how long it will take.Could be a year, could be 3 or 4.Nobody knows for sure.

Keep him for what? Trading him during the summer while competing against OTT trying to trade Karlsson as well? Trade him at the deadline this year for less than last year? Sign him to a $7.7M/6 year contract so we have him on the books when he's 34 and we're trying to compete?

He very well might and that’s the unfortunate aspect of timing in sports.

But I also don’t see any viable long term alternatives that don’t present their own unique set of problems.

We could, in theory, make a bunch of moves that maximize Zibanejad and end up a middle of the road team with no viable chance at being a championship team.

And that’s assuming Zibanejad actually becomes that player. That’s not a given. Not because he isn’t talented enough, but because there are a number of factors at work — not the least of which is health.

The Rangers arrived at a point where there were no easy choices. They chose a path. It’s going to be difficult. But I also think the alternatives were just as difficult. Different, but difficult nonetheless.

For less.

I saw nothing from McD last year, with the Rangers and with Tampa, that would make me want to give him a comparable contract to the one he received. Keeping in mind, that it would’ve cost as more than what Florida was able to offer.

It’s also not hard to envision a scenario in which McD is still on this roster, the trade to Tampa never happened, and this team is only marginally better than it is now.

Why? Because Lundqvist is still 36. The right side is still a question mark. A number of forward talents are placeholders. And McD’s game is still fading year by year.

In that same scenario, the complaints are still loud and frequent because the team is still mediocre at best, infuriating at worst, and there’s not even the hope that things will get better with time.

If we’re looking at the 2014 version of McD, it’s a plausible alternative.

But we weren’t looking at that player, nor would we be if he was here today. That player is a memory from nearly half a decade ago. And that player doesn’t fix this defense, nor does he return a can’t-miss, blue chip prospect.

Not in 2018. Not in 2019. And certainly not in any realistic scenario afterwards.

You have already decided that and this year hasn't even started. You have no idea how long it is going to take our mutiple draft picks and acquired assets to develop. I wish I had a keen hockey mind such as yours.

Relatively speaking, I’m also a bit concerned about the lack of a bonafide 1D in the system

This draft has the potential for a few but I’d rather take a forward

I’m not sure how they plan to address it. I think the start of their plan was to just draft as many D as possible and pray one hit, as evidence by this past summers draft
