Aren't we eligible for the lottery if we miss? Also, factor in the utter embarrassment of getting destroyed in the playoffs. There is no way we are even "in" a game. not sure what valuable experience that gives the team.
I had the same thought but then I knew that the difference in pick position would be negligible.
It would be better for Byfield and Co. to see what it takes to win just one playoff game, even if it is against Colorado. They haven't played in anything close to what the first 10 minutes of Game 1 will be like.
That's why missing now, and in this fashion, puts this season very much in the waste of time possibility. Black hole finish was always in play and a possibility during the rebuild but you'd like it to be slow start and then the youth starts to contribute and they help push the team into the race at the end. Instead, we've got a collapse here at the end and the young forwards aren't doing much while I think Turcotte is just a rumor at this point.
You end the season not very encouraged about the prospect pool at forward and wondering if we have an actual 1C next season or a competent goaltender. Outside of the surprise Durzi/Spence appearances, the bright spots of the season are career years from 25+ year olds where you don't know if they can do it again consistently with Kempe needing a new contract off of a true breakout season.
Lots to be excited about at the end of the 2009 season which was the 3rd year of DL's rebuild. #1C/#1D/#1G are all kids with a bunch of other young contributors as well. Playoffs in Year 4. This is Blake's 4th year and they still might make the playoffs like in DL's rebuild. A healthy Doughty and they probably aren't sweating as much at this point but you still aren't thinking about what an amazing future this team has. DL had so much more young talent that he could bank on--inherited in 23/11/32--versus what Blake has and Blake still inherited the #1C/#1W/#1D and, I suppose, the #1G on this team.
As fans, we just have such a "what the f*** do we have on our hands here with this team" when you would have really liked some clarity. Maybe we do have clarity on most of the draftees from 2017 - 2019 and we just don't want to believe what we are seeing. It's Blake's job to have that clarity though so I hope he knocks it out of the park this offseason so we can be legitimately excited about the team's chances come opening night. Until then, we are going to be sitting here as either a non-playoff team or a team that was in the playoffs for a week wondering how this team gets better.
My first idea is that Byfield lives at the Kings training facility all summer: literally. Like, have his mail forwarded there type shit.
