Haven't read this whole thread, but Petry was embarrassing last year. Completely mailed it in, and that is why his value was so low. Question is, was this the regression of a 34 YO dman or just the result of a year long pout.
And he also was non existent during the Cup run. I realize he had the hand injury, and the devil eye thing, but he has been MIA for 18 months now. I can see why teams wouldn't be excited about bringing him on. Also, his playoff numbers, overall are pretty bad.
Lastly, I'm glad we didn't retain. That's a loser's game, to pay a player to play somewhere else and not add an asset / roster player. We still need 8 D and we don't have 8 NHL D with Petry out, So even if Matheson is overpaid by 1MM, that is much better IMO then paying Petry 2MM per to play somewhere else.
Poehling is the wildcard, but hard to see any top 6 upside and we have loads of prospects.
Overall trade is meh, but so are the players traded. Pens probably win this one, but if fans are frustrated by that, anger should be at Petry who gave up on the team.
