Some truly embarrassing comments in this thread from a lot of Canadiens fans who don't have a clue what they are talking about.

People calling Mike Matheson "an awful defensemen" are dumber than a bag of rocks.

Get a clue. Watch some games.

I promise you that Mike Matheson will plug a hole for the Canadiens for a season or two and then be flipped, likely at a deadline, for decent value.

He's a decent two-way defensemen who I personally advocated the Canadiens target when the Panthers were rumoured to be interested in moving him. He's coming off career bests for goals, assists and points, is very mobile and be plugged in on one of the Canadiens power play units.

He's a place holder who can log a lot of minutes on a lousy Canadiens blue line next year and then he can be moved out when the time comes.
People were creaming their panties here when Petry was signed to that extension.

"He's one of the best D's in the league" and " that contract is gonna age well because his play won't dip"

To go from that to "what do you expect, he had no value" is what makes this sad.

The Pens ranked 22nd on the PP last year... This is why they want Petry...Matheson had a good offensive season but 0 PP goals... Will be interesting to see who St-Louis will place at the blue line as PP specialists!
Wideman and a forward like Suzuki or Hoffman.

Yes. Poehling was awful. BUT, Habs are very shallow at C. Outside the 4 regulars (Suzuki-Dvorak-Dach-Evans).... they have next to none. Maybe Rem Pitlick can help once in a while. Nobody good in Laval.

Drouin, Byron and Pezzetta can all also fill in at C.

After the trade and the Pitlick signing, the Habs now have, according to CapFriendly, $1.24M in cap space. If they want to create more cap space, they can either ship out other players or at worst, they can place someone on Off-Season LTIR, which would most likely be Byron. So that would create an extra $3.4M in cap space for them.

They can also go 10% over the cap in the off-season.

Good post, agree. And maybe not even get moved out, this team will be competitive when Matheson is still on contract, and 4.5 will age well as the cap increases. He fits our window much better, and frankly we don't need any more picks or B prospects, cupboard is full there.

My comparaison is base on their use and skill sets.
More defensive, 2nd pairing material.

Who will run the PP so our kids can get some points on the board and gain confidence?
Cause right now, I really hope Barron make the team cause Wideman is the best we got for this.
Matheson is not defensive at all, his 11 goals at ES put him 9th in the entire league for D's goal scoring.

I mean he scored more EVP points than Klingberg and Pietrangelo last season...

Maybe they plan to use him on the PP as Letang was eating all the PP minutes in Pittsburgh. :dunno:

I never said anything about him having no value. He obviously had value in order to garner Mike Matheson in return.

I don't get what you're talking about here.

If anyone thinks that Petry was just traded for "no value" then they really don't have a clue about how to evaluate an NHL defensemen.

He runs the team, it's his team. I doubt Hughes makes trades without consulting him.

Are you serious?

You think the General Mangers in the NHL run all of their transactions by the Team President?

Remember when we got a 27 years old Petry for 2nd ....he was awful until that age with Edmonton

A 27 years old Matheson this year was better than Petry was at the time.

A.defenseman reach his prime at 28,29 30 years old.

A very very good trade guys !!!

I’m I the only one okay with this deal?
No you're not.

Consider though that Petry became an expensive liability at 34. Which team was really willing to give a king's ransom? A prospect and 2nd rounder would have been fine. This trade hurts the rebuild.

Matheson seems like another Alzner, but Petry was just like him when he came to Montreal. If Matheson has the will to do well, he can become a top pairing D in his home town. If things don't workout, the Habs saved about 2 mil in capspace for the next 4 years.

I have a feeling that HuGo wants to shed as much salary for Molson as he can. The plan is not working out lol.

Personally I'd like to see Matheson stay and grow into the veteran defensemen around a lot of the younger guys he's going to be playing with in Montreal, but I don't think it's realistic.

The reality is, Matheson is going to be a guy targeted at the trade deadline while logging big minutes on a non playoff team and I think Hughes will end up cashing in those chips.
