Some truly embarrassing comments in this thread from a lot of Canadiens fans who don't have a clue what they are talking about.

People calling Mike Matheson "an awful defensemen" are dumber than a bag of rocks.

Get a clue. Watch some games.

I promise you that Mike Matheson will plug a hole for the Canadiens for a season or two and then be flipped, likely at a deadline, for decent value.

He's a decent two-way defensemen who I personally advocated the Canadiens target when the Panthers were rumoured to be interested in moving him. He's coming off career bests for goals, assists and points, is very mobile and be plugged in on one of the Canadiens power play units.

He's a place holder who can log a lot of minutes on a lousy Canadiens blue line next year and then he can be moved out when the time comes.

I don’t dislike the player, but I’m not a fan of adding a nearly 5mil cap hit for 4 more years. Just doesn’t seem like it offers much cap relief. Oh well. We wanted Petry out, anf we found a taker.
It opens 2.2M cap space for years 1-3, and adds just under 5M for year 4. Not sure how that’s not good. In year 4M, cap will have jumped by then to close to 90M probably so 4.7M for 1 year really isn’t that bad

Margeson - Eddy
Barron - Savard
Harris - Wideman

Or

Makar - Toews
Girard - Byram
Johnson - Manson

Its good. We just need 6 new D to be closer to a Cup.
I know this is probably sarcasm...but like...we are in a rebuild.

Colorado was trash for a while before they got this good. We are going to have to suck for a bit.

The Pens ranked 22nd on the PP last year... This is why they want Petry...Matheson had a good offensive season but 0 PP goals... Will be interesting to see who St-Louis will place at the blue line as PP specialists!

Europeans like Montreal (Canada )

Top Americans don’t want to play in Canada past 28 (these are facts )- their wives don’t like the cold. Facts

I’m I the only one okay with this deal?
No I like it. It’s just the unrealistic fans who are complaining because they don’t understand it.
- Petry had to go. Poehling too
- opens 2.2M in cap space for 3 years
- year 4, cap will have gone up to 90M so 1 year left of matheson at under 5M is fine
- matheson is a good player who I think can thrive under MSL
- Poehling has brutal and was never going to play here. We have enough centres and he was never going to become anything more than an average 3C

This deal is totally fine

Pens fan I come in peace.

Wondering how good of a prospect Poehling is?

I see a lot of comments about Matheson being shit. I think you guys are going to love him.

Matheson is incredible and honestly I think he's on the up.

Edit he isn't a prospect he's 23 Big F.

Agreed. I've liked him since his Panthers days so I'm happy the team got younger.

The trade looked bad initially, but after reflecting its ok.

It was basically Poehling for Pitlick
And Petry for Matheson + 4th

Petry is the better defenseman, but he's also 34 and requested a trade.
The habs get a 28 year old D who's coming off a better season than Petry and who seems to be in a upward trajectory. They also get a 4th and save 1.3 M in cap space.

After the Burns, Pacioretty, and Mcdonagh trade, there was no way we were getting back good picks/prospects for Petry

WTF are posters complaining about? Petry is 6 years older than Matheson but Matheson makes 2+ mill less and is only a slight downgrade when we don't even want to contend.
Poehling was stuck behind 5 other guys at C, is basically a plumber right now
and we save 3 mill on the cap.
It's a good deal.
HuGo can always move matheson if he wants to
100% what i think too.

Imagine thinking we would get a 1st for 34 year old guy with several years left, high cap and coming off the worst season of his career + requesting a trade. That's just wishful thinking. We are lucky we got Matheson, have you guys seen his playoffs?

What is it with this board's crazy obsession with PK Subban?
He's a fan favourite and would make a fine cheap RD to play on the third pair.

No one is saying pay him a lot...cause he isn't that player anymore. But he loved being a Hab and I don't think there is anything wrong with wanting to bring someone like that in on a cheap.

Yes. Poehling was awful. BUT, Habs are very shallow at C. Outside the 4 regulars (Suzuki-Dvorak-Dach-Evans).... they have next to none. Maybe Rem Pitlick can help once in a while. Nobody good in Laval.
