I love Matheson. He is Quebecois after all, maybe JC should make a segment on how great we finally get player from Quebec.

Yes, I know....but considering we'll need to sign other players, like Caufield....not much Cap space is amde in the end.

Last thing we needed was another long term heavy contract.....especially at a position where we have Guhle, Harris, Norlinder, Xhekaj are pushing to get a spot.

I understand the trade and being stuck with Petry and we shouldn't get something in return.....but nothing would have been a better return in my book.
Hughes confirmed that he absolutely looked to get a D back so I guess this was the plan all the way.

Who’s your bordeline NHL centre in case of emergency? That was Poehling. Jake gets injured once or twice a season. Dach, unsure of his physical status. You need more.

During a season where the team is hoping young players develop and the team loses a lot of hockey games to get a high end draft pick? My guess is whoever is centering the first line in Laval, followed by whoever is centering the second line in Laval.

Well, he can play on a bottom 6 but he is not good at anything, not consistent, good speed and big body but he doesn’t use it to his advantage, still some potential but expect a bottom 6 player in the upcoming years
Exactly. And falls asleep. Becomes complacent without having accomplished anything yet.

After the trade and the Pitlick signing, the Habs now have, according to CapFriendly, $1.24M in cap space. If they want to create more cap space, they can either ship out other players or at worst, they can place someone on Off-Season LTIR, which would most likely be Byron. So that would create an extra $3.4M in cap space for them.

They can also go 10% over the cap in the off-season.
Still A LOT of work to be done to fix this team. Still way too many bad contracts. One step at a time.

He's been saying it since the start that if he traded Petry, he would be looking for a vet D to replace him. What people missed was the unsaid "as the return for Petry".

Pens fan I come in peace.

Wondering how good of a prospect Poehling is?

I see a lot of comments about Matheson being shit. I think you guys are going to love him.

Matheson is incredible and honestly I think he's on the up.

Edit he isn't a prospect he's 23 Big F.
I like Poehling. Thing he has upside as a Lw. Fast with some offensive upside. Wouldn’t expect much more than a 3rd who will bounce between the fourth line. Can spot on a second line but don’t think he has that upside. But who knows.

Personally I'd like to see Matheson stay and grow into the veteran defensemen around a lot of the younger guys he's going to be playing with in Montreal, but I don't think it's realistic.

The reality is, Matheson is going to be a guy targeted at the trade deadline while logging big minutes on a non playoff team and I think Hughes will end up cashing in those chips.
With 4 years left that TDL deal is a ways off. If he does play solid top 4, hard to think they will trade him. I'm not sure that Hughes wants to tank the way the posters here do, obviously not as playoff team next year but I suspect and hope Hughes understands that a total tank season would be detrimental to his young players.

Mike is already a very solid dman,.. i do expect to see him elevate his game further just like
how Petry , Chiarot did after coming to Montreal,..Also Mike's born in Quebec and speaks
french so that's a bonus for this market .

I would imagine he will be extra pumped up to play in his home province .,.,.,.,
welcome home and welcome aboard Mike , good luck this season!

Matheson is not defensive at all, his 11 goals at ES put him 9th in the entire league for D's goal scoring.

I mean he scored more EVP points than Klingberg and Pietrangelo last season...

Maybe they plan to use him on the PP as Letang was eating all the PP minutes in Pittsburgh. :dunno:

You know what I meant.......
Yes, he had his best season last year, but he's not an offensive D-man like those you mentioned neither and never forget he won't be playing with Crosby, Letang or Malkin over here.

No you're not.

Consider though that Petry became an expensive liability at 34. Which team was really willing to give a king's ransom? A prospect and 2nd rounder would have been fine. This trade hurts the rebuild.

Matheson seems like another Alzner, but Petry was just like him when he came to Montreal. If Matheson has the will to do well, he can become a top pairing D in his home town. If things don't workout, the Habs saved about 2 mil in capspace for the next 4 years.

I have a feeling that HuGo wants to shed as much salary for Molson as he can. The plan is not working out lol.
Alzner couldn't skate nor open a jar, Matheson is a fantastic skater and from reports can still open jars.

Hughes also mentioned 10,000 times the need to get some cap flexibility, mentioned Petry many times while talking about it. We didn't get any Cap flexibility so far.
