I didn't know he was a former client... Makes me more optimistic about the trade & their evaluation of Matheson's fit & potential to contribute.

Yea. Hughes negotiated that contract he just acquired. 🤣

Hughes obviously has deep knowledge on the player and the person. Hughes also spoke in depth with Letang about what Matheson was like as a teammate. Letang was disappointed tha he'd be losing Matheson.

I disagree that nothing would be better.

But Hughes said that if they trade Petry, they'd look to bring in a vet D to replace those minutes. So by hook or by crook, someone would replace Petry. He ended up doing it in the same deal.

Also something else Hughes said, he doesn't want to put his prospects in positions they're not ready for. So unless any of them actually push for a spot, then he would rather err on the side of caution.

Agreed....but I do expect at least one of them pushing for top 4 minutes in the next 2 years, which is why I don't get adding Matheson. Next year I get it....but after that, nope!

Can't get a RD.....no more cap space....which is the problem with that move. Actually the move is not a problem if he manage to shed other contracts.

We still can't even sign Dach.

You just work very hard to get rid of Drouin, Hoffman, Byron and Armia. And you don't take Dadonov for Weber. I am pretty sure a guy like BriseBois in TB would had work his way in this mess.
Brisebois is probably an idiot. Yzerman was the mastermind behind Tampa.

We probably move Edmundson either at this TD or 2024s.

This trade is sbout a wash. As far as both players go, meh whatever. Poehling is lucky to get 20 goals in 5 years. We didn’t gain enough cap flexibility in this trade imo. This trade failed to address the issue (cap flexibility).
This tells me there will be more. Too many wingers still…and not a lot of centres.

It honestly wouldn't surprise me. Would bring some excitement to a likely not so good year. Just depends on team chemistry and such, but on a cheap (1M for 1 Year) type deal I don't see why not.
I think Stralman is the only decent RHD left on the market... and PK, of course.

Matheson is a lowkey top pair defenseman. Take it from a Rangers fan I’m glad the Pens don’t have him anymore. Elite skater, can throw big hits, and is very good in transition. He’s really not as bad as people think, hasn’t been bad since he left Florida
He was pretty good in the post season last year.

By the time his contract hits year three , the cap will have increased and his salary will not look as bad.

That we don't know for sure.
Doesn't matter if you're paying a guy we won't need by year 3.

Matherson is a number 3-4 D...he would sucks in a 1st pairing role, would be grossly overpaid for a 3rd pairing
I expect that in year 2 of his contract, we will have a better and cheaper option as 2nd pairing on the left side

A big FU to Petry. He literally sabatoged his play last year to get traded which caused his value to whittle to nothing.

And Kent....please man, your moves so far this off season are actually making me miss Bozovin.
Hughes' bergevenesque moves will likely continue.
