Thats a few players already that Hughes "knows well" and tries to fetch for. Is this a hockey team or just a bunch of his clients?

I don't really care that he was his agent, seems the only players he goes for are ones he knows personally. Getting way too personal with his decisions, won't be a good hockey team with this mindset.
This is a trend based on how many players? I see Matheson...but who else?

Do you not think adding good LR guys and removing disgruntled players (Petry and Poehling is no LR saint) is a better environment for a young team that is looking to develop?

This is essentially....Matheson, Pitlick and a 4th for Petry and Poehling.

I don't think that's outrageous especially when you look at what the likes of Burns and McDonagh got.

We understand why all these moves were done. But was not there more clever ways to do moves and stay a more relevant team ? Lehkonen and Romanov should still be Habs. And Wright should had been the #1 pick.
Lek had to go or else it was another bad contract in the making. Wright and Romanov needed to be part of the rebuild. I guess will be bottom feeders for a while.

He just scored 9 playing on the 4th line. Easily could hit 20+ on the wing in the top 6. Senseless to give him up for nothing. Petry for Matheson was a good enough upgrade for Pittsburg.

Pretty much any NHL player will produce some points if you give them top6 minutes and PP time, doesn't mean much.

But the problem is that we have Gallagher, Caufield, Anderson, Hoffman, Pitlick, Byron, Armia, Drouin and Dadonov who are all better options than Poehling on the wings. Makes no sense to try him there without him earning it.

I prefer keeping Rem Pitlick than keeping Poehling. It was pretty much one or the other.

Just makes no sense.

Matheson who is bad defensively for 4 more years at 5M$.
Because you have to get rid of Petry who has 6.2 per for 3 years
While losing Poehling, a 1st rounder

I'm...stunned. I understand it's all about Bergie insanely poor asset management....but Hughes wasn't even able to look bad doing it. That's just beyond mediocre.

Petry put us in a bad bargaining position by requesting a trade and to a couple of US teams only so yeah return not awesome.

That said it’s exactly the other way around for the PLD discussions. We were the Jets with Petry wanting out.

As much as Hughes was trying to say the right things for this trade .... This trade was always going to be bad because Petry was worst last year then the previous years and the whole league knew he requested a trade (which cannot include a Canadian Team) . At least there was no retention and Matheson can be traded in a couple years while a Petry retention cannot be traded .

It's a decent trade. Petry was hard to move, we might just have caught a cheaper/younger guy with same on ice results.

It makes me forgive a little bit for Romanov.

We all thought out of his former clients from Pittsburgh, it would be Letang that would be brought in. Turns out, that former client from the Pens was Matheson.
Wish he'd stop with this former clients bullshit. Why did they hire him if its just to sign his old clients? Lol

Bringing players that fail elsewhere and praying they turn their whole game around is not a rebuild.

Not surprised to see him go. Aside from his first game he's been bad at best, low IQ vanilla player who didn't use his size or his speed to his advantage. Pittsburgh is a good organization to flourish in though, so the trade is good for his career.

Aside from that I like Matheson and I like that there's no retention.

How do you pay both Lehkonen and Romanov? Who do you trade?

If we get the Matheson from last year it's a decent trade. He is a decent second pairing defenseman. But if we get the Matheson from before that..... Welcome to Montreal Connor.

It all depends which Matheson we see.
....So you're saying it's win win? Nice.

Good job Hughes.

I think people are underrating the impact of keeping a disgruntled player all year on the culture we're trying to build.

This is a brutal trade. Petry's value wasn't high because of last year's performance. I expect him to rebound in Pittsburgh though.

The goal was to get picks or prospects, not other Alzner/Savard clones.

I didn't expect much from new management after that controversial first pick and Dach/Romanov move, but this deal is horrendous.

They will be icing a bunch of Morisettes for years to come.

Calling Matheson an Alzner/Savard clone is like calling Caufield a power forward. Matheson is a poor man's Petry.
