Horrible. We got bent over.
Matheson was Pittsburgh's 4th most used D last year and got more points than Petry. He is more than 6 years younger than Jeff and has a good shot.

Former 1st round pick, in the prime of his career now.

There is hope he will be decent I guess, and he is a home town boy, LOL.

Finally, we replace Poehling with Rem Pitlick in the bottom 6, for not much more salary.

I don’t think he’ll turn into ROR 2.0 overnight, but I liked his speed and tenacity added to a fair amount of skills. I think he’s on his way to be a very good top 9 player that can play up the line-up on occasion as the 3rd wheel on a scoring line.

I hear yeah! I felt he was better last season. I wish him the best

I think this is a solid deal. Felt like we were going to get bent over in any trade involving Petry given what we've seen comparable players moved for this offseason, the trade request, and his terrible performance this year. He really didn't look better under MSL and that's pretty concerning. Poehling hasn't looked good for a while. Happy for him to have a change of scenery.

Matheson looks like a good addition. Good size, good skating, and can add a bit of offence. The fact he's 28 is a major plus. I haven't seen him much in Pittsburgh, but I liked him with Boston College way back in the day

Wish we could have moved more salary out, but the price to do so is astronomical right now.

Yes, I know....but considering we'll need to sign other players, like Caufield....not much Cap space is amde in the end.

Last thing we needed was another long term heavy contract.....especially at a position where we have Guhle, Harris, Norlinder, Xhekaj are pushing to get a spot.

I understand the trade and being stuck with Petry and we shouldn't get something in return.....but nothing would have been a better return in my book.

I disagree that nothing would be better.

But Hughes said that if they trade Petry, they'd look to bring in a vet D to replace those minutes. So by hook or by crook, someone would replace Petry. He ended up doing it in the same deal.

Also something else Hughes said, he doesn't want to put his prospects in positions they're not ready for. So unless any of them actually push for a spot, then he would rather err on the side of caution.

Nothing against Matheson.
I actually like the player.
It's just that we were expecting Petry's trade to be a salary dump.
We are still pretty much in cap hell.

That wasn't going to happen for a couple of reasons:

1) it's almost impossible to clear cap space right now.

2) there was no way Montreal was going to go into next season with D core of Edmundson, Savard, Wideman and rookies. Even if they were tanking, that would have not only been the worst D core in the NHL next seasons, it would have been the worst D core the NHL has seen in a while.

The writing was on the wall regarding some of these high priced players in their 30’s. At first glance this trade looks great for the Pens, but Petry can absolutely revert back to his form in the first half of last season, i mean who knows. He can be fantastic but he can also be putrid. Adding Poehling to the trade is meh…but with Evans I see him being a little redundant plus I always questioned his attitude. Hughes is taking a major risk with Matheson. Yes he’s a hometown boy that was good last season, but for 5 million for 4 more seasons, he better hope he does that year after year.

I’ll reserve judgement until I see what Matheson can do.

Well he looks like Jeff Petry.

He skates like Jeff Petry.

His stats are better than Jeff Petry's around the same age, less physical player but similar blocked shots.

He's basically Jeff Petry.

Welcome Petry2
I wouldn't say less physical, his game is based on skating more than force but Matheson hits hard.

Not really liking the direction since the draft..

Unless Matheson is a piece for another trade I don't get it, Petry for free wouldve been better than another veteran who takes the spot of a young Dman, especially when he's bad. Why not try to get Pierre-Olivier Joseph instead, Pitt is clearly trying 1 more time with the core and just adding pieces. Get a good young defenseman and move Petry at the same time, no?

Trying to do too much I think..

You still need NHL defensemen. Whose spot is Matheson taking exactly???

This is a brutal trade. Petry's value wasn't high because of last year's performance. I expect him to rebound in Pittsburgh though.

The goal was to get picks or prospects, not other Alzner/Savard clones.

I didn't expect much from new management after that controversial first pick and Dach/Romanov move, but this deal is horrendous.

They will be icing a bunch of Morisettes for years to come.

20 career goal? Probably.

20 goal in a season? Pretty doubtful.
He just scored 9 playing on the 4th line. Easily could hit 20+ on the wing in the top 6. Senseless to give him up for nothing. Petry for Matheson was a good enough upgrade for Pittsburg.
