What a trade! Love HuGo. You guys are all out to lunch.

We traded a problem in Petry, and a bust in Poehling for a dman who is equal to Petry but gets paid 1.5m less, signed for 1 extra year AND we used the cap relief to resign R. Pitlick which was a great secondary scoring player for us.

Slowly ridding ourselves of the Bergevin problems and getting younger, faster, bigger too.

Cant wait for the next move

It's a surprising move but I don't hate it. In a vacuum there's something to be said for moving a 35 year old #1 for a 28 year old #3-4 and saving 1.5M to do it. It's weird given I think we all expected a different framework and bigger cap savings, but at the end of the day it's one of those things where we wanted to trade Petry for cap space to add players (particularly a dman to insulate prospects), and instead we just did both in one deal.

I'm kinda rationalizing it as he'll be the vet LD for us and this gives us the freedom to move Edmundson as soon as Guhle is ready, especially given he was pretty effective for Pittsburgh last year. If last year was for real I think this works out nicely, if he regresses back to what he was in Florida this is a stinker.

Overall it's an interesting deal, not really what I was expecting but I think after the initial disappoint subsided (I was hoping for something more in line with the Toffoli return) I kinda like this.

Not really liking the direction since the draft..

Unless Matheson is a piece for another trade I don't get it, Petry for free wouldve been better than another veteran who takes the spot of a young Dman, especially when he's bad. Why not try to get Pierre-Olivier Joseph instead, Pitt is clearly trying 1 more time with the core and just adding pieces. Get a good young defenseman and move Petry at the same time, no?

Trying to do too much I think..

But by next year, others will be shipped out. So cap space will be gained in other ways.

Yes, I know....but considering we'll need to sign other players, like Caufield....not much Cap space is amde in the end.

Last thing we needed was another long term heavy contract.....especially at a position where we have Guhle, Harris, Norlinder, Xhekaj are pushing to get a spot.

I understand the trade and being stuck with Petry and we shouldn't get something in return.....but nothing would have been a better return in my book.

I was high on him pre NHL but his hockey IQ is low and the book is out now. He’s a bottom 6F at this stage. Won’t do anything special but could be a solid depth guy from the ages of 25-30.

I don’t think he’ll turn into ROR 2.0 overnight, but I liked his speed and tenacity added to a fair amount of skills. I think he’s on his way to be a very good top 9 player that can play up the line-up on occasion as the 3rd wheel on a scoring line.

I don’t mind moving him, but I don’t get why he was moved in this trade unless the goal is to use the cap space on a bigger fish à la Dubois.

Hughes was his agent, knows him well, says he's a great guy to mentor the youngsters, saves 1.5 in cap space or so, had to trade Petry anyway, clock was ticking.
