Observations:
1 - Once they started getting the puck deep and working, the game turned. Other than Joseph and Marino Pittsburgh's D right now is terrible at first passes. We didn't exploit that until 3rd period. The thing that annoys me is that the team knows this. They've been preaching it but the players have been really bad at it. Even when they were going well tonight, many of the vets that need to set an example were the biggest culprits of going east/west or coughing it up or just failing to chip it past PGH D. Very frustrating.
2 - The best thing I can say about Anthony Bitetto is I barely noticed him. Even when they called his name, I still barely noticed him. I don't know if he'll actually be steady and consistent, but boy is it nice to not notice a bottom pairing D for a change.
3 - I know some are complaining about ice time for Gauthier and Laf. But honestly, the game was won because we gave more ice to the bottom six muckers and they made a huge difference. Lemieux and PDG were a big reason why they won. And Rooney not giving up on that play let to the goal.
4. When Shesty plays well, we're a different more composed team.
5. Miller/Trouba looking better and better
6. Laf showed some flashes of strong play. But there were also a few moments where he took his foot off the gas on the forecheck and he really needs to keep going.
7. As for Gauthier, aside from the stupid penalty, I liked his game. He showed his strength along the boards a few times. I like his game.
8. Howden fighting was actually good for the team. But we have a serious lack of leadership going on. The vets are not keeping it simple enough offensively. they're not working hard enough for their goals and to create space and they are supposed to lead by example. They're failing the kids. It was the journeymen vets who led the way and pulled the team out of the funk.
Quinn needs to take out the tape of the 94 Rangers in the playoffs. That forward group was not hugely gifted after Kovy, Mess and Graves. Larmer and Anderssons skills had eroded. It was all forecheck forecheck forecheck, get pucks deep and outwork your opponent. We need to adopt a similar tenacity and desire to dump and go get it. Even if we lose every game at least there's something to build on.
