NEW YORK – TORONTO (Nov. 1, 2023) – The National Hockey League today announced that the Ottawa Senators will forfeit a first-round draft pick for their role in the July 2021 trade of Player Evgenii Dadonov from the Senators to the Vegas Golden Knights and the subsequent, invalidated March 2022 Dadonov trade between the Golden Knights and the Anaheim Ducks.
Ottawa will forfeit its first-round draft pick in one of the 2024, 2025 or 2026 Drafts. The determination as to which pick will be forfeited will be made by Ottawa within 24 hours of the conclusion of the Draft Lottery for that year. The League will have no further comment on the matter.
I suppose the league strong armed them into this decision.

This must have been the part that took the league two years to decide.
This is Backstrom's way of saying he has nothing left in the tank. A great player that I wish well.
And penalizing Ottawa for the leagues own incompetence (and Vegas') is a complete joke but expected because it is an unimportant team and Canadian. CapFriendly has the NM etc details. Why don't the people who have to approve the trade?

Washington is getting ready to rebuild, they aren't going to add players for a playoff run.
Chiarelli is probably the interim GM. The question is can he make trades? If he is going to be there for the rest of the season he needs to be able to make some moves and that is when Hughes should be on the phone to Ottawa 4-5 times a day.
Don't know that. Will they begin a rebuild or ride Ovy in to the sunset?
