Serious question, but why does it always seem like the "stats guys" think the team is terrible and lucky when they're winning (see all of last year) and good but unlucky when they're losing (see this abortion of a season). Why are these statistics so divorced from the eye test?

Seems to go with the territory no matter how one sided that may be..

Because the stats are just shot attempts and when you are always trailing you are destined to outshoot your opponent even if you're really not that good of a team at all.

Score effects are huge.

Eh, people always used to say "their analytics only suck because they're always winning" and then we get to the playoffs and we find out we actually suck.

That's always been my interpretation but I've been continually told I'm wrong.

Now the team looks terrible and they are apparently just unlucky, and Shattenkirk is "dominant" when all I see in even strength situations is him getting repeatedly walked and coughing the puck up left and right.

It's both. He does some things at an elite level, and there are things he does that make him look like a bottom pairing defensemen. I said last season that I think he's a good 2nd pairing defender who is an elite PP presence, but he needs a guy to cover for him.

You just have to take the good with the bad at this point. The Rangers hitched their wagon to him for the next 4 years.

If I remember correctly Pitts was in trouble financially then they sold the team to Mario.
That was a legit tank.
Not sure I could say the same about CHI.

its amazing he's getting paid 8 million this season. I wanna puke. Thank goodness this is his final season on broadway

Gorton needs to pull the trigger and jettison AV. His time here is done and, after 10 games, this season is already in jeopardy. Ruff interim coach, see how it goes, hire the right guy next year. What's with this 7D nonsense? Trade someone. Give a kid some minutes. Something.

I agree. I defended AV in the past but this year he has been just as culpable as any player on the ice.
This 11/7 system is a joke and even though not sure you can blame lias and filip not being quite ready for the nhl yet you sure can blame him playing buch on the 4th line and TD only on the second pp unit. You have to sink or swim with guys like Buch and TD. Don't ruin them like montreal has/is with AG

I still don't understand why we traded Puempel for a defenseman. Couldn't we have added something (ie: Gropp) and gotten Sheary from Detroit instead?

This team isn't at the point where it should even consider tanking providing the right pieces are added but I do have my doubts as to whether JG has what it takes to get the job done..

Brady Skjei played 14 minutes...

He's been absolutely horrendous all season. People have been ripping on Shattenkirk who has had some bad moments for sure, but has been playing better as of late is getting torn apart, while Skjei gets a free pass.
