Tanking was a much bigger guarantee to get a high pick back then.

Not to mention that there are other factors. The Penguins sucked at a time where an arguable Top 10 player in history was up for grabs AND they missed out on Ovechkin the year before so they had to settle for another future HOF with the 2nd pick.

The Blackhawks did get their players but they were unmitigated garbage for like a decade before that core's first big playoff run.

Hell, look at the Sabres now. They basically sold everything that wasn't boarded down a few years back and yet we are still waiting.

It's not about the Rangers specifically. I would imagine that any professional athlete would be really upset if management told them to throw games.
I don't think any team has intentionally lost games once on the ice. I think some franchises have intentionally iced bad lineups. I also think some franchises make a conscious effort not to employ stop gap measures or apply band aids to flawed rosters.

But they still didn't tear it down. They haven't had a losing season in 25 years.

They probably could have made a run at the 2016 playoffs and decided not to. I predict the Rangers will get hot and probably end up a few points out at the deadline. If we decided at that point to sell and forget the playoffs, I fully support it.

What I don't support is trading McDonagh, trading Zuccarello, trading Kreider, trading Shattenkirk, and picking zeroeth overall for the next ten years.
They haven’t had a losing season because there’s no cap in baseball. You can buy enough talent to stay afloat. Can’t do that in hockey. But with way they knew getting financial flexibility along with stocking up on young talent was the only measure for long term success. So they were sellers at the dead line.

Dahlin is a damn good start

I would LOVE to get Dahlin but just assuming that the rest will automatically fall into place to the point where this team would be a serious contender is nothing more than an EXTREME gamble.

Hell you can even add the Oilers who were a laughingstock on HF until they connected with a Hail Mary to get a 4th crack at a 1st overall player worth his salt who also happened to be the best player since some poorly mustachioed guy in Pittsburgh.

I support being sellers. But the lack of a cap isn't the reason for staying semi-competitive.

20 out of 30 MLB teams had losing seasons. The Yankees are competitive because they try to be competitive.

So if Hank goes down with an injury, like even 5-8 games, this team is dead. With their start they've left no room for any sort of dip in play between now and the end of the season. This team has been tremendously healthy so far this season and they have stunk it up. When injuries eventually hit, things could get worse.

That's just it. It's not just Dahlin. This is supposedly a loaded draft with several potentially difference making players. How many difference making players have we drafted in the last 20 years?

Well this may give some people here a semblance of hope

In AV's first season with us in 2013/14 we went 3-7-0 in our first 10 games collecting 6 pts and we ended the season 45-31-6 with 96 pts. Good enough for 2nd in the metro right behind Pittsburgh , who we overcame a 3-1 deficit in the playoffs while also beating them for the first time in the playoffs.

In our first 10 games this season we are 2-6-2 with 6 pts......but as someone else pointed out earlier we would have to play the rest of the season at a 102 point pace from here on out like we did in 2013/14

Something. Needs. To . Be . Done . Soon......Otherwise this is just pure hoping
13-14 team was much better. Stepan, Richards, Brassard, Moore Centers. Stralman was a beast, Nash is a shell of himself, Hank is not as good as he was, Talbot is not here

What it is, is frustrating. I understand that. And I know the hole is probably already too big.

But I don't see anything terrible here. We've played plenty of games poorly and lost almost all of them. But we've also played plenty of games well and.......lost almost all of them.

It's just not there for us right now. It's part of the sport. It's been a long time since we've had to face this. I think most people would agree we outperformed ourselves in each of the last three years, to varying extents.

San Jose had a similar year in 2015. Obviously very talented but just nothing went right and they missed the playoffs. I think at this point you keep your picks and take them as high as they go. Trade replaceable pieces at the deadline if you can.

What I wouldn't do is start tearing away the core and trade McDonagh, Zucc, Kreider, etc. I really don't think this team is that far off from being good. That same Sharks team went to the Finals in 2016.

I only look to move mcdonagh because he doesn't look much better than slightly above average and a 7 year certain of the Shattenkirk contract does not sound appetizing

Tearing it down and trading everyone is OD. For me, bottoming out this year would be ideal because this team clearly has talent, and adding a guy as talented as a Dahlin or Svechnikov could catapult this team into a contender. We don't need to sell and sell and finish last for the next 10 years lmao.

The funny thing is that this all falls on JG's shoulders and I don't see one bit of criticism on here.
I'm honestly shocked at that..

I hear ya and it would be great to obtain such talent but things would have to fall into place perfectly for it to happen.
It's not so easy where you say..OK, let's tank and you're guaranteed those players.
Doesn't work like that..

This is true , but as I said earlier , we were .500 up until New Years that season. If we look at it in context , had that 2013/14 team not taken off , would they have been just as poor as this one is currently should they have missed the playoffs that year ? We will never know and we won't know the fate of this season until a bit later on......Maybe not even until January ;)

again this all hoping at the moment I do stress

If they bring in another coach, it will take weeks to implement a system. I think if Gorton changes coaches, by the time they start to get the system they will be way down in the standings

Eh, you never know. Depends on how much the new coach wants to change. St. Louis fired Hitch last year and Yeo had the team go 22-8-2. The last two times the Pens canned their coaches, the new guy came in and took them to Cup wins.

That being said, this team is definitely not as good as the teams I mentioned above.

Shattenkirk has been good, no matter what people think. Imagine if this team HADN'T signed him this offseason. The team may have had a worse start...

And some people even pine for Girardi. We'd probably be 0-10 with him instead of Shattenkirk.

McDonagh has been much, much better than average this season. The only problem with our D has been Skjei, who, like another poster pointed out, keeps getting a free pass.
