Laffy is worth more then 2 years ago but less then last year. He's simply a good 50-60 2W on a serious team. His contract puts him square into Suzuki and CC category, which he's not worth to us. We got Slaf and Laine, plus Demidov on the horizon so a winger is not our first priority. If he was a solid 2C, let's talk but otherwise, not a trade we need.

He are going to have a top 5-7 pick AGAIN AND mid teen pick. If you have a good, young center that can be reasonably likely to be a 2C, let's talk. Hello McT or Cozens? Let's see.

Laf only .5ppg player since his new contract. I hope Montreal don't touch him.

Yea, Laf was touted as big a number 1 overall star as any in the last decade.

Not how I remember it. There was average hype for him compared to other recent #1 picks.

Both him and Slaf are underwhelming as #1 picks but I'd say Slaf has a bigger chance of busting.

During Quinn's tenure, well Quinn was not a good coach and gave the kids zero rope. 1st time NHL coach worried more about looking good than teaching kids (which was something he was brought in to do)
During Gallant's tenure, the PP was probably at its peak. Had the first coach given Laf PP1 minutes, we could have seen an established player. Entirely different career trajectory.
Under Lavi and especially this season, Zibanejad has been really awful. A negative factor on the PP. He plays in Laf's natural PP spot. Any amateur coach would not ignore this fact and give Laf that PP time. The PP2 unit gets like 20-30 sec of ice time on the PP. It's long enough to like make one play unless they are starting in the O-zone and win their faceoff.
It's not about if he's good enough. Anytime there is a roster issue (injury, etc) Laf does get the PP1 slot. It's an issue that the coach refuses to remove the established and unproductive vet from PP1.

what I am getting out of this is 3 different NHL coaches said he shouldnt be on PP1.

What makes anyone think that onthe Habs Laffy would be on the first PP?

RIGHT NOW...Laine, CC, Suzuki, Hutson, Slaf

NEXT YEAR...Laine, CC, Suzuki, Hutson, Demidov

Good luck to 2W Laffy pushing any of those guys off the first unit.

Nor do i, but everything has a price.

With a big, long term contract like that, the return value will fall off a cliff. At 40 points, it's zero or negative. At 50-60 points its a mid first, at 70-80 points it's a very high first.

The Slaf value in trade is the usual HF rooocket scienrist nonsense. It actually exposes their lack knowledge of who Slaf was playing with until recently. Put the blame on stupid SMarty.

Because he's 2 years and a half older, that's a lot in term of development, he's playing with better players and he can barely get more points than Slaf... Would be a very stupid trade for the Habs.
Two and a half years for Slaf in Montreal's system, who have proven to be better at developing young talent than the Rangers.

It's a big difference. I wouldn't do the swap if I was a Habs fan. Slaf could very well end up the better player.

In fairness, NYR have scored like 10 goals since that contract...
In fairness, when you pay a guy over $7m you expect him to be a solution to the goal scoring problem not just some guy along for the ride.

Maybe you need to see who is running the Habs, who the director of amature scouting is and where they came from. You are judging the same people in very different ways based on the jersey they represent.

I'm not even sure why you think the Habs are so great at developing talent to begin with.

I'm not going to pretend that he's been good, but you can say the same thing for everybody else on the team that got money. There's clearly a problem right now with that group.

He's much younger
True. But imo Lafreniere is the more complete player. I think it would be a very good trade for the Habs. Lafreniere pits up pretty good numbers with very little cherry ice time. Pkay him with Suzuki, Caufield, and Hudson (especially PP time like Slafkoski gets) and he will put up great numbers.

If he's going to be a 50pt player he's overpaid by about $2M. That's a lot.
Hopefully he can find his groove again and put up some points more consistently.
Everyone expects 70+ from this kid.

You see. When you’re a Rangers fan you can’t have nice things.

Everyone hates you and your team sucks.

It’s a lot of fun.

Yeah, like when you get basically free all-star calibre players who will only play for your team, or you win the draft lottery after missing the playoffs by a couple points, or when your team isn’t on any NTC lists.

I feel your pain.

They didn’t even really “miss” the playoffs either. They got to play in the poor mans wildcard games and then was even further rewarded with the 1st overall pick that year.

true or false

Laf has had 3 coaches and none of them have put him on PP1
False. He's gotten time but like miniscule amounts. Can you see why you should maybe reconsider thinking in black and white?

You have to invest in these kids. It's asinine to give Ryan Strome all the PP1 ice time over Laf. The excuse coaches always gave in interviews was "I'm doing my best to win games." Where we can disagree is that that short term thinking is damaging. Long term investments also don't always pay off though. Detroit threw Zadina quite a bit of PP time in his first few years. Nugent Hopkins got thrown right into the fire. Arizona had no problem putting Cooley in over established PP vets.

here, let's try this one
True or False

David Quinn is a head coach I want for my team
