At the time of this signing, Rangers fans couldn't stop bragging about it, I guess because this guy finally hit the 50 point mark in his fourth full NHL season?

This year, he's on pace to again finish around ~50-55 points (even with more powerplay time) and have somewhere around a -30 rating.

Do people really think 7 years at almost an $8mil cap hit for a ~50 point winger is good?

Part of the issue with him is that he still appears to be largely a passenger. When the team is struggling, he's not the guy that you turn to for a stretch and watch him go on a bit of a tear to help keep the team afloat overall. With his new contract and status as a rising player as other guys on the team age, they need him to be that sort of player more often. Not guy a guy who plays well when the players around him play well and doesn't play well when they don't.

I think he is more like a 3rd line winger who is being used too heavily to justify massively overpaying him.

I think you have a high expectation of 3rd line wingers these days. Yeah, he's been disappointing to watch after signing his contract. Started the season out very strong and fizzled. You can say the entire team did that I guess. We obviously want more from him, but he's showed to be more than a 3rd line winger, whether he gets back to playing like that or not. He stopped moving his feet again. He was also used in that role last season before the massive contract, so that doesn't even make sense.
