Confirmed Signing with Link: [NYR] D Will Borgen signs extension with the Rangers (5 years, $4.1M AAV)

Well it’s good to pay him for what his absolute potential is. So, if he hits his ceiling and stays healthy, it’s a fair deal!

True, especially here when the real GM has a history of so many great moves…
Drury has made some great moves and some not great moves. What’s your point?

rangers fans seem to love it.

Everyone else seems to hate it.

This Kraken fan thinks its ok.

Nothing like a tiny sample size and a couple points to trigger a 5 + year deal for a 28 year old bottom pairing guy. Teams never regret these deals.

He didn't suddenly come into existence with the trade. He had a rough start to this year but in the two years prior was a very solid #4 type of guy.

I don’t think Chatfield is overpaid in the slightest. I’d also pick him over Borgen at this moment - I think he’s been a steadier player. If anything him reigning in his physicality a touch has made him more reliable.

That said, it’s not a bad comp, Borgen is definitely bigger and physical - and if Borgen is helping to unlock a better version of KAM, that’s probably worth something on top. Maybe in a vacuum people don’t view Borgen as a top four defenseman - but building a blueline is as much about chemistry as anything. The Rangers have clearly been using him in a top 4 ES role. Doesn’t make him a second pair defenseman in vacuum - but if it works, it works.

It is kind of nuts to me that Braden Schneider, who I have all kinds of time for, is still on such a limited role. I hope the Rags can find a better use for him than third pair minutes. Borgen has clearly surpassed him in the RHD pecking order in usage and Borgen’s contract I think clearly shows Rangers brass view him highly enough that he will be getting the bulk of second pair RHD minutes, not Schneider. I hope this doesn’t turn into another instance of a safe but limited player blunting the usage and growth of a younger guy who clearly has more upside.
First off it’s not the Rags it’s Rangers, rags is an insult to Rangers fans. Schneider is most likely going to be 1st pair LD with Fox. Lindgren is almost certainly gone either at the deadline or FA. Schneider will get plenty of minutes with Fox. The second pair will be miller and will. Third pair will be Mancini and whoever they add for a bottom paid LD in 25-26. Adding some more about the contract, RHD defenseman like Borgen are extremely valuable at deadlines. At some point in the future he can be moved. Especially with cap going up, his contract will be easily absorbed if you trade him in a few years.

I get that he's been good lately but don't they plan on extending Schneider too and maybe to top 4 money as well? Cap is rising so if he keeps playing well, it's not a bad deal but Brendan Smith vibes from this by playing good a month and a half and getting extended

But there's also no reason other than Brendan Smith being a guy that played for the Rangers and was a defenseman that played well in a middle of the road role that we're comparing Borgen to him. He's his own man. Brendan Smith didn't take his job serious and ended up gaining a bunch of weight and punting a season as a result. Borgen COULD be Brendan Smith and he could also be Stralman or Klein. For 4.1M with a rising cap I'm taking that risk. It's not a massive risk. The Shesterkin contract was a WAAAAAY bigger risk.
I agree. Shesterkin contract is a huge risk and this not as much but when I saw the contract I immediately thought of B. Smith and, obviously, hope it doesn't end up like that. But the real thing that annoys me about this whole thing is: we should of never traded an asset like Kakko for this guy in the first place. Different assets maybe. And, again, I hope this works out. But you gave up Kakko and for what should be your 3rd best RHD but are pushing him up and potentially hurting Schneiders development.
So, in a vacuum, this contract might not end up being too bad. I just hate the thought that it cost us Kakko and could hurt Schneider while also could lead to spending assets on a potentially lost season

It was reported that the team views Schneider as a guy that can play both sides. So he might be Fox's partner.

But if it ends up neither him nor Borgen can play the left side, best case scenario, you have 2 similar assets who both should be in the same role or, worst case scenario, you are over paying a 3rd pairing guy. But hopefully Schneider fits on the left because I think he would fit with Fox nicely

He played fairly well with Trouba this year. As well as you can play with Trouba.

Yeah. Honestly, I just wish Borgen was a LHD. Because then I would view this contract and the Kakko trade much different but hopefully Schneider fits next to Fox.

I don't understand the anger over Kakko. Good for him for producing currently but he doesn't have the skill or the head for the game to be a consistent producer. Middle 6 guy. It's not really someone to lose sleep over. Sure I guess Drury could have fleeced a GM that was enamored with his draft position but that was almost 6 years ago.

Lots of people not watching Borgen since coming to New York

We can check on how Seattle is doing in a couple years

Trust me, these people weren't watching him in Seattle either.

This legit seems like a terrible deal. 4.1 for a very low end 6th d?

No one in Seattle thought of him as a "very low end 6th D". He was well liked the last couple years, with a lot of speculation that he was ready for a middle pair role. Just had a bad start to this year, that he's evidently rebounded out of.

I love all the armchair GMs commenting like it’s some horrible deal when they have barely watched him play in NY, seen how well he has fit in, steadied KAM, etc. Also, $4.1m is nothing with the cap set to explode. It’s a solid deal for a solid #4.
He's played 16 games. Let's revisit this deal in a season and a half.

Saying he was a solid #4 is a bit of a stretch too though. Like, I think if you have Borgen in your top 4 that's probably not ideal. I think he's at best a 4/5 tweener and an ideal #5. But he was absolutely not that to start the year and didn't look anywhere close to it. I'm glad that he rebounded but signing him for this contract and term is pretty risky when he's already shown that level of play for a pretty decent number of games. If his play had continued like that for the rest of the season and into next season I think there was a pretty good chance he might not even be in the NHL anymore.

I get that he's been pretty solid with Rangers...but man, it's a small sample and that's a huge commitment. Even with the cap going up, that's not an insignificant chunk of change that you're locked into for a very long time now.
