A month ago I don't think Borgen thought this type of deal would even be in the cards for him. Either the cap hit or the term.

Whether or not a month is enough to earn both, I'll leave for you to decide.

My word, Drury is a toolbox.

He’s not the 4/5D many selling him as here. He’s a clear cut bottom pairing guy with 5 years and 4.1m cap hit now.

Rangers fans are happy with this deal?

He's a good underrated player, but I thought he's good because you DONT have to sign him to something like this contract.

I love all the armchair GMs commenting like it’s some horrible deal when they have barely watched him play in NY, seen how well he has fit in, steadied KAM, etc. Also, $4.1m is nothing with the cap set to explode. It’s a solid deal for a solid #4.
The contract is bad the trade was bad everything about this transaction is bad . I think kakko got another point today hes been a point game a player for seattle so far. Seattle might have to pay some bucks for this young star .

It's not even 5% of next year's projected cap. Frankly, i just don't see the big deal either way.

People's perceptions of cap hits are still stuck in 2012. This is nothing. It's a base-level UFA salary for an NHL regular.

Kinda reminds me of that time when the Rangers extended Brendan Smith to similar money. He was also 28.
^this is exactly what I thought of. A guy who wasn't excelling on a bad team who comes and bring physicality and has a good run gets an extension he probably should not. Hopefully it does not end up like that but still do not love the idea of potentially blocking Schneider (if this leads to his trade it better be for a guy like Petterson and not Miller).
I literally don't think anyone gives a shit about his points. The sample size is fair. But he's been a solid second pairing guy for us and has played a HUGE part in the D stabilizing. I know the bar is low but Miller with Trouba was one of worst pairings in hockey. Miller with Borgen has been solid. Sometimes you need to make decisions based on small sample size. If Drury waited till the end of the season people would still say the sample size is small. You don't always have the luxury of several seasons with a team before having to make an extension decision. Also everyone talking about 3rd pairing D-man or whatever but the Rangers had Mikkola (forget the spelling) and let him go and then he was a solid defenseman on a team that won the cup. Sometimes sold but unspectacular is not a bad thing.

I also don't understand why sample size is used against Borgen but now Kakko is a point per game player even though he's never been anything close to that.
^I believe what happened after they extended Brendan Smith led to them passing on extending Mikkola, for fear the same thing would happened

It’s not that horrible. lol. Ppl are funny. It’s not a discount by any means. But it’s what ever. The rangers have been winning with him.

We have people with Brendan Smith PTSD like it was some huge team anchor. It really wasn't THAT big of a deal, IMHO.

Justifying the crappy trade

That would make a lot of sense. It’s already clear they lost the trade, but if you let Borgen walk, you have next to nothing to show for Kakko. And Borgen’s agent probably knew that. Set the price at an overpay, and stay firm, and Drury kind of has to cave

yes.

he's a pretty solid 3rd pairing rhd with physicality. can step in on your 2nd pair a bit.

think Jalen Chatfield but bigger and more physical.

Chatfield makes what 3m, he's probably overpaid about 500k, in the NHL that's slightly.

I don’t think Chatfield is overpaid in the slightest. I’d also pick him over Borgen at this moment - I think he’s been a steadier player. If anything him reigning in his physicality a touch has made him more reliable.

That said, it’s not a bad comp, Borgen is definitely bigger and physical - and if Borgen is helping to unlock a better version of KAM, that’s probably worth something on top. Maybe in a vacuum people don’t view Borgen as a top four defenseman - but building a blueline is as much about chemistry as anything. The Rangers have clearly been using him in a top 4 ES role. Doesn’t make him a second pair defenseman in vacuum - but if it works, it works.

It is kind of nuts to me that Braden Schneider, who I have all kinds of time for, is still on such a limited role. I hope the Rags can find a better use for him than third pair minutes. Borgen has clearly surpassed him in the RHD pecking order in usage and Borgen’s contract I think clearly shows Rangers brass view him highly enough that he will be getting the bulk of second pair RHD minutes, not Schneider. I hope this doesn’t turn into another instance of a safe but limited player blunting the usage and growth of a younger guy who clearly has more upside.

Well it’s good to pay him for what his absolute potential is. So, if he hits his ceiling and stays healthy, it’s a fair deal!

True, especially here when the real GM has a history of so many great moves…

I'm not saying it was necessarily a huge anchor even though:
1) it was $4.2 million AAV which would be comparable to a $5 million today (not great for a guy who TOI was as much as Rempe at times)
2) He also was put on waivers and unclaimed (kinda defines anchor contract if no one will take him for free)
3) the Rangers entered a rebuild so it didn't hurt as much
4) the Rangers were forced to buyout one of if not the greatest player they ever had in Lundqvist while being stuck with Smith @ $4.2

But there's also no reason other than Brendan Smith being a guy that played for the Rangers and was a defenseman that played well in a middle of the road role that we're comparing Borgen to him. He's his own man. Brendan Smith didn't take his job serious and ended up gaining a bunch of weight and punting a season as a result. Borgen COULD be Brendan Smith and he could also be Stralman or Klein. For 4.1M with a rising cap I'm taking that risk. It's not a massive risk. The Shesterkin contract was a WAAAAAY bigger risk.
