Confirmed Signing with Link: [NYR] D Will Borgen signs extension with the Rangers (5 years, $4.1M AAV)

With the Rangers he's played 17 games

My point is that this conversation just leaves out his strong track record over two full seasons prior to this one - it's as if coming from Seattle is on par with getting called up from Bridgeport - people just leave it out of the conversation when they say "he's only played 17 games". And then they micro-analyze each game he's played in the last few weeks, without any context of his long term track record. This is an established NHLer and we can evaluate his career to date.

When asked for comment Billy Borgen said “Today is the greatest day I’ve ever known”

you guys know the cap is going to shoot up in the offseason right

a $4M aav contract nowadays is nothing. It’s like, average salary. Borgen was making 2.7 on his last deal and has been playing really well, did we all think he was taking a paycut bc some guys on twitter think he sucks? He probably could have gotten a bigger contract on the market, teams get super desperate for competent defenseman. even if he stops playing like a decent 2nd pair D and goes back to being a solid 3rd pair D he’ll be movable. Especially when the cap is pushing 100M.

It’s not going to kill them or anything but it’s the kind of deal good teams simply don’t give to bottom of the roster guys. Which, despite his ~15 game sample with NYR, Borgen is

Keep up the good work, Drury. Here’s to a long, unsuccessful tenure.

Even the folks defending the deal are talking about how movable it is. When the cap goes up, $4M+ for a bottom pair defender will still be dogshit.
If your bottom defender is playing like crap, sheltered and used limited, I 100% agree. You can't spend that. If your bottom defender is playing 18 minutes a night, used on the PK, and not sheltered from tough matchups, it's a different story, and only a bottom defender in the sense that you may have better dmen, or players put on different pairs for balance. Borgan was having a good game against Colorado's top players, until he made a game ending decision with less than 20 seconds left in the game. You can't excuse that pass. But maybe he felt obligated to try and get the puck to Panarin who clearly wanted it. If we eliminate that decision and 0 point outcome, he definitely played a 4m+ game from a defender. Although, sample size.

Just curious, what about the scenario in which he goes back to being the dogshit 3rd pairing dmen he was in Seattle this year?

"solid 3rd pairing" is not the worst case scenario here.

See, Graves, Ryan over in pittsburgh (who had a much larger track record of success than Borgen does)
