Confirmed Signing with Link: [NYR] D Will Borgen signs extension with the Rangers (5 years, $4.1M AAV)

I don’t love the cap hit.

But I also think there is more going on here:
NYR is likely moving on from Lindgren. Either via trade (my guess) or letting him go as UFA this summer.

So I think Borgen is going to be taking Lindgren’s spot in the top 4 from here on. In that case $4.1 for a #4 Defenseman is not bad

We would need a LD of similar quality and potential.

Potential? Not so much

Rielly 2M retained
Cowan (our top prospect, middle 6 projection, can play LW/RW)
and/or our 2nd this year

After that we have Chadwick but it's like 2-3 years out

Seems about a million too high, when you compare it to what other higher end #5s have gotten, but the cap is potentially rising a lot, so maybe this will be the new norm.

If this gets KAM to a place where he's not costing us the game nightly for long enough to move him out before he signs his next contract, I am ok with this. If you're not happy with the numbers here, I think KAM's deal will ruin your day.

Do you think this means he's a seller on Lindgren? Can't trade Lindgren and lose the Dman you traded a #2OA for as a UFA.

That's pretty high for a 3rd pair guy no?
This contract would be for his 28-32 yr old sessons. 2015-16 was his 18 yr old season , 24/25 is his 27 yr old sesson

It's a little high for what would be a bottom pair D. If he does mid pair then the price is good.

It would also be fine if you knew you expect to have an ELC D in top 6 the last 2-3 yrs of that contract

I really like this signing. He has been a great fit in N.Y. He has really helped Miller massively as well and stabilised that 2nd line.

A little high on the cap hit but that's to be expected with the cap hit going to exceed $100m in next 2 years.

If the cap goes to $92 mil and it almost certainly will rise then $4 mil is kind of a mean average for a player on a 23 man roster as in 23 X 4mil = ? He's been pretty solid since he came here and pretty much pairing with K'Andre Miller and Miller's the 2nd pair LD.

Slightly?
yes.

he's a pretty solid 3rd pairing rhd with physicality. can step in on your 2nd pair a bit.

think Jalen Chatfield but bigger and more physical.

Chatfield makes what 3m, he's probably overpaid about 500k, in the NHL that's slightly.

I love all the armchair GMs commenting like it’s some horrible deal when they have barely watched him play in NY, seen how well he has fit in, steadied KAM, etc. Also, $4.1m is nothing with the cap set to explode. It’s a solid deal for a solid #4.

Good to know 17 games of playing well for the Rangers invalidates 250 games from before where he was a pretty clear 5/6 guy.

It's a horrendous contract handed out by a moron GM.

Chatfield makes $1.1 million less and is signed for 2 fewer years.

Borgen getting a 3x3 deal would be fair. 5x4.1 is both too many years and too much money.

rangers fans seem to love it.

Everyone else seems to hate it.

:monkey:

Most Rangers fans are in favor of it but it's DEFINITELY not unanimous. But he's fit in very well and helped improve the D significantly. And with the rising cap I don't think it's such a crazy contract.

Can always count on you to shit on anything Rangers related 😂

Nothing like a tiny sample size and a couple points to trigger a 5 + year deal for a 28 year old bottom pairing guy. Teams never regret these deals.

I literally don't think anyone gives a shit about his points. The sample size is fair. But he's been a solid second pairing guy for us and has played a HUGE part in the D stabilizing. I know the bar is low but Miller with Trouba was one of worst pairings in hockey. Miller with Borgen has been solid. Sometimes you need to make decisions based on small sample size. If Drury waited till the end of the season people would still say the sample size is small. You don't always have the luxury of several seasons with a team before having to make an extension decision. Also everyone talking about 3rd pairing D-man or whatever but the Rangers had Mikkola (forget the spelling) and let him go and then he was a solid defenseman on a team that won the cup. Sometimes sold but unspectacular is not a bad thing.

I also don't understand why sample size is used against Borgen but now Kakko is a point per game player even though he's never been anything close to that.

Not sure how this effects it, but still have to believe, if K’Andre Miller doesn’t get himself a new, long-term contract prior to the deadline, the Rangers will likely move him. Likely before the deadline, giving his new team several months to reach a long-term agreement, but 100% before he can file for arbitration in June.

Teams are prettified to go to arbitration with these higher-end, younger dmen, because they’ll lose the hearings, and pay large AAVs anyway, as the player uses arbitration to walk as a UFA in 2-3 years. Knowing he can control his own trade destination as well. Ala Alex Debrincat and how he played the Sens.

So teams know it’s either a long-term contract or trading them, before the player gains all that control.

Same applies to Byrum in Buffalo as well.

Teams did this to themselves handing out these monster deals to unproven kids. The fact we haven’t heard anything about a new contract for Miller, suggests the Rangers may have already made their decision.

People need to realise this is literally only a $1.7m rise in Borgens cap hit.

Not exactly a bank breaker.

It's only for next season.
It's only a NMC this season. Next season is full NTC, followed by modified NTC after that.
So theoretically he could be waived and claimed next season à la Goodrow (incredibly unlikely)
