Why though? I mean he’s not entirely wrong. The guy made it incredibly obvious he only wanted the Rangers… they could have waited a bit to see if he would take less.

So, you thought he was going to give the team more of a discount than he already has?

Silly concept for athletes with short shelf lives (15-20 years).

What if he has, and the early results are very promising, another Norris Trophy winning season? Still think its smart to "wait to see if he takes less"

Yes, because he’s already essentially guaranteed he only wants to play for the NYR. Really no harm and waiting and hoping you can convince him to buy into a discount since he wants to stay here for so long. Especially for a team with some pretty iffy contracts already

Trying to lowball the guy will quickly turn him from wanting NY as his only team to wanting out of NY just as badly.

He provided the organization with a discount, is playing better thus far this year.

If anything, the Rangers wait and the price would go up, not down

Or again, you use your negotiation skills as an executive (that you’d hopefully have) to convince him that if he wants to stay here so badly for the next 7 years that it’s in his best interest to give more of a discount so we can build another team. Otherwise he might spend the next 7 years in limbo like they have been for a long time now.

I guess the NYR haven’t been great at negotiating discounts for a while though. Luckily for them they keep getting good players who only want to play for them

So essentially through the use of the College loophole, Fox forced his way off two teams to his desired location in NY. Man Rangers always get free talent when needed. Thanks for that breakdown btw.

Yeah. Fox is a giant a**hole.

To be fair, Fox had to give up a lot for that privilege. He was drafted the same year as McAvoy, but McAvoy signed after just one year of college while Fox signed with 3. Now they both got paid this season, but McAvoy is coming off a 2 year x $5M bridge deal since he entered the league at 19. So Fox had to leave $10 million on the table just to even have a credible threat of going the UFA route (and would still have to stay in college an additional year on top of that).

Not much of a "loophole" from the player standpoint. I get that people are bitter their team missed out on a draft pick, but these guys aren't your slaves. A lot of them made huge sacrifices to earn the right to choose what team to sign with. So I've really never understood why people hold it against the player personally. You can call him an asshole when you turn down millions of dollars to move across the country.

Usually not how good negotiating works…

I don't think he was signing for less than Makar's AAV (9m x 6) especially given the D contracts that have been thrown around to guys about to hit UFA. So basically you can try and squeeze him for 500k, or be happy he signed for an extra year at a slightly higher AAV. Messing around trying to save 500k instead of making your core players happy at a mutually beneficial price seems like bad management.

The idea that Fox will only ever play for the Rangers is nonsense. Sure he forced his way there when breaking into the league, in part because they're his hometown team yes, but also because they were in the perfect stage of a rebuild to give a young defenseman all the slack he needed to develop.

Now that he has developed into arguably the best defenseman in the league, however, who's to say he wasn't willing to sign somewhere else to maximize his earnings? People love to point out that past performance is not indicative of future performance. Well, past preferences aren't indicative of future preferences either. Believe it or not, players are actually human beings with thoughts and feelings that might change over time. Who knew??

He’s the real Deal. Huge cap hit but signing him now instead of before he has another monster season might have been really smart.

He seems to only want to play for the Rangers so I don't think he was going to go for the $11 million Doughty/Karlsson make. He wanted to make his money and come in at least on par with some of the other higher end d-men.

Looks like you aren't signing any young, emerging d-man for less than 9 these days. Crazy how much the market changed in the last year

Lol I remember when I was arguing with a Rangers fan who was insisting Fox would take a discount because "he loves the Rangers so much". Turns out he didn't

This is a perfectly fair contract but the Rangers are going to be in an awful cap situation in the near future.

Laf/Kakko underperforming might actually help them in a weird way as neither looks like they will be getting lucrative deals when their ELCs expire but yea Rangers are going to be in the rough soon cap-wise.

Nobody is taking Trouba at 8 million a year.
Trouba is only 1 million overpaid. If he hit free agency I bet he’s getting 8 million again easily. This narrative that Trouba is bad only comes from him making 8 million. Him and Miller have been better than Lindgren-Fox this season according to advanced analytics and have been one of the best pairings in the league overall defensively

Why do people keep implying that the Rangers didn't negotiate?

The last five Norris winners to hit UFA after winning it got 11, 11, 9, 9, and 8. And none of them were 23 with the upside Fox has.
They also hadn’t essentially said they only want to play for one team nor had only two years experience

And let's not forget that his deal was signed with the expectation of the cap rising, it was signed pre Covid. We can look at it now as him being overpaid, but if Covid never happened and the cap was at 86m right now or something, his deal doesn't look as bad. Teams sign deals like this all the time with their cap expectations in mind. Nobody could've predicted that Trouba's deal would play out in a flat cap environment.

It's still not terrible, he's been really good so it's not like it's an albatross attached to a bad player or anything like that - he's just slightly overpaid.

Or, just maybe, this is a fairly obvious argument that the executives for a major sports team already presented to Fox’s camp and this deal is the lowest he’s willing to accept.

You keep saying he can only play here as if it’s some rule. He wanted to play here coming into the league and seemingly still wants to. He’s also a human being who’s circumstances have changed quite a lot since then. There’s no solid guarantee he won’t play anywhere else if the relationship sours

Trouba probably gets something like 7m x 7 if he were a UFA after this year. Is that even a better contract than 8m x 4 from the team's perspective?

About time to end the NCAA draftees special treatment. There is no way prospects should have the leverage to bully their way out of the organization where they were draft.

That being said, solid deal.
