I mean Fox has a higher aav and Nurse signed for 8 but ok laugh away.
Yeah, Fox is signed for 1 less year and for 250k more a season. Considering how much better he is than Nurse it makes Fox's deal look even better in comparison. Fox could've signed for 10.5x6 and nobody would've even blinked.

It's pretty nuts that people still don't realize how good Fox is. They see the point totals and his size and assume he's just an offensive defenseman when in reality is defense is even better than his offense. When he's on the ice he completely controls the flow of everything going on. He dominates offensively and he's the shutdown defenseman. He's objectively at minimum a top 3 defenseman in the entire league and this deal locks him in for basically his entire prime at a figure that is more than fair now as it's a slight discount compared to what he could've gotten and the back half of the deal will be quite the steal when the cap starts to rise again.

lol so much for him taking a massive discount

But it's actually a good, fair deal. Getting 7 years instead of 5 or 6 is not nothing.

No, you're missing the point. Fox's contract has nothing to do with Nurse so why even bother bringing it up? Nurse wasn't even the worst UFA Dman contract handed out.

I never said that Werenski and Makar are Fox tier, I'm saying that those are the comparables. It's just common sense if you know anything about how free agent contracts work.

Idk if you are realizing now more than ever rfa talent is getting paid more than what they’d get before. The distinction isn’t nearly as relevant as it used to be, especially for high end talent. This has been the case with fwds for awhile, and the trend is now happening with dmen. Yes, I think it is frankly ridiculous both get paid roughly the same amount of money given that one has shown 2 yrs of alright top pairing caliber play (and fancy stats aren’t great), while the other is Norris caliber in their second year in the league and will probably be a bonafide contender baring injury for that contract.

The Seth jones contact was an awful one too, so ya not in disagreement there.

Rumors of a home discount turned out to be rumors. The term of the contract is 7 years, not 8 years.

I was hoping for $ 70M (AAV $ 8,75M) for 8 years.
Taking into account three factors:
Player desires to play Rangers.
СBA regulations.
Team composition.

This is the average level of GM work. This is a common deal.

In no way am I downplaying how good Fox is, I don't watch a ton of Ranger games (few here and there) but you guys do so I'll take you word on him. I just still find it funny people act like Nurse is a 6 million dollar dman and is massively over paid.

Right?? People acting like he won the Norris last year or something

I guess you should have kept Deangelo too and have another point producer. Both are good offensively and are subpar to average defensively. Then you can have two guys making 9.5 million, SWEET! Add Trouba to that trio of guys who can’t shut any team down. Have 8 guys take up 90%+ of your cap and sign AHL guys to 8 year contracts like Goodrow and enforcers to fill the roster…

So you haven't watched Fox or Trouba play this year, have you?

We have another guy here that has clearly not watched a minute or second of Adam Fox, lol

Edit-Make that Trouba as well

Georgiev and Strome are gone. Latest next summer they would walk, as the can't Rangers afford them, even if they signed for 20% less.

Signing Kakko and Laf will be a challenge and the rest of the roster will be rounded out with cheap contracts.

So why did Carolina trade him to the Rangers for a 2nd ? Can someone give he a history lesson.

Carolina actually traded two seconds for him.

Calgary drafted him, but I think they realized that he wasn't going to sign with Calgary. I think Calgary hoped to change his mind, but Carolina really wanted him in the Lindholm/Hanifin deal and I think they realized that Fox wasn't going to sign even though he hinted he'd considered it. I think Flames management believed he would go as far as to go NCAA UFA route to play for the Rangers, so got whatever they could for him.

Carolina immediately tried to get Fox to sign, but even they realized he had one destination in mind and they weren't signing him. Fox's stock just kept going up. NYR really wanted him and paid 2 seconds for him. At the time it was a pretty steep price for the rights of someone rumored to want to play for the Rangers only and could do the NCAA UFA route the year after. In hindsight, if NYR knew what Fox would develop into, they pay double that without blinking.

So essentially through the use of the College loophole, Fox forced his way off two teams to his desired location in NY. Man Rangers always get free talent when needed. Thanks for that breakdown btw.

Most of it is conjecture and never truly confirmed, but you find articles like this:

Carolina Hurricanes Trade Adam Fox

The Rangers were always the expected destination for a trade, given the belief that he would leave college early and sign with them. Fox has completed three seasons at Harvard and could become an unrestricted free agent next summer, but instead is expected to start his professional career in 2019-20.

This was the exact scenario that the Calgary Flames did not want to take part in when they decided to include Fox in last summer’s blockbuster trade with the Hurricanes. It was clear to them that he had no intention on signing in Calgary, but the Hurricanes did believe that they could get him under contract. For whatever reason, that wasn’t to be and the Rangers seemed like the eventual destination.

Holy cow!
Me thinks the GM's and their salary cap analysts are expecting the cap to jump up significantly sometime soon!

Adam Fox is a savage.
He’s been bar none the best ranger D to lace them up since Brian Leetch.
This is a good deal. He’s like a unicorn, sees the ice like he’s watching it from the camera up high and solid defensively and doesn’t take penalties.
The salary cap will be going up in 2 seasons. He’s a piece the rangers have to have to make it to the next level

This guy is an incredible defenseman, everytime I see the Rangers it seems like he can predict the future. He's almost always making the right decisions.

Always risky to give these contracts to pure offensive defensemen. If Fox loses his offensive production for any reason it becomes a brutal contract very quickly.

How do people like this still exist?
