I have a feeling that these 3 are going to be a lot of Norris finalists/winners over the next 5-7 years.
1 of these guys on any given year can win. 3 studs.

Hedman is still a heck of a defenseman, but he’s getting older now. He’ll still be in the mix for 3-4 more years maybe. Then it’s a 3 horse race.
Its entirely possible for Heiskanen, Chychrun, and Dahlin to join that group too

Even if they don't want to play and cannot be forced, the drafter team is by no means under compulsion to trade their rights for nothing, like the Canes did with Fox. Let them play in Europe, unless good compensation is acquired in return for their rights.

Way more stupid to give a competitor a potentially elite player for free, than to have him sit out or play overseas (if the player would actually be willing to go that far: multiple years in Europe, huge loss of money, disastrous hindrance to development)

If you don’t sign an ELC, the team loses your rights after 3 years. So if they draft you at 18 and you stay in college through your junior year, if you don’t sign at the end of that junior year you become a UFA. So the team has incentive to trade you for SOMETHING before you walk for free. Fox was drafted by Calgary, btw. He’d been traded to Carolina because they knew he wasn’t signing in CGY and then traded from CAR because he wasn’t signing their either.

A few teams (Rangers for one) will ALWAYS have a huge advantage over other teams in attracting/retaining free agents.

While that’s undeniably true, Fox grew up a Rangers fan from birth in an obsessed Rangers household, so as much as it fits the trend of Rangers getting high profile free agents, he was going to NY whether they had that advantage or not. Also no one knew he was going to be as good as he’s been. Smart Harvard kid. May seem entitled, but he banked on himself. Got drafted but stayed at Harvard getting his education, putting off his dream of playing NHL hockey, betting that he wouldn’t get hurt and that when his rights expired he’d be good enough and coveted enough to get a contract and roster spot on his childhood dream team. A little entitled, but a little ballsy too. Good for him. Now he’s probably looking at how the rest of the roster is performing and wondering if he just doomed himself with this contact.

Sorry, didn't know prospects have the prerogative of just deciding they are not going to sign for their draft team and can freely change to one of their choosing akin to if they were a UFA (or for minimal compensation, as in this case).

My bad.

My only question is, why don't we see this more often? Could it be that there was something different in the response of the Canes to this situation, in comparison to, lets say, if McDavid had refused to sign with the Oilers? Surely there are many top prospects who for whatever reason would prefer another team. It seems to me unlikely the Oilers would have just let him (or insert in place of McDavid any good prospect) go for basically nothing just because he didn't feel like playing there.

Indeed, the correct response of the Canes would have been to let him play in the Uni or go to Europe if no NHL team compensated them adequately for his rights. But instead they opted to give a #1 D prospect away for nothing.
You’re new to the college draft rules, aren’t you? You do know that if the Canes didn’t sign him that he would be a UFA?

A whopping three points???? Damn you sure got me good buddy!! That sure makes up for losing a Norris winner for nothing!!!
Probably feels a lot like having 4 top 10 picks including a first and second overall either bust or want out of the franchise.

I thought it felt closer to offer sheeting a 3rd line center for three times more than his value.

No it's more like just watching another 3rd overall pick wasted on a crappy player, but yeah, same idea lol.
