A lot of people showing their ass in this thread as stat watchers commenting on players they’re completely unfamiliar with. It could be argued that Fox’s defensive game is actually better than his offensive game (although his offensive game just keeps getting better). People just see he’s an “undersized” D who puts up points and then speak through their rectums.

Makar got the same on less term lol

Steal. For a norris winner at 23 this is at least a million less than he could've gotten.

Also LOL he makes the same as Nurse. That's just funny.
I mean Fox has a higher aav and Nurse signed for 8 but ok laugh away.

UFA vs. RFA. Not sure why this needs to explained to hockey fans with any semblance of hockey knowledge.

The comparisons are Makar and Werenski. This is a fair if not good deal for Fox.

Not gonna lie, I've never been a fan of that big of a contract given to young players that barely played in the league

I know he won the Norris but I don't know... its a small sample size for that big of a contract

But like I said it's me, doesn't mean it's not gonna be a good contract, I know it's the norm now and I like this way better then give this to a 30 years old dmen for what he's done and regret it 2 or 3 years later

7.5m? That’s nice, you don’t magically get to set market prices in your own head though.

The real problem contracts are crappier players making more than they’re worth. NYR have some iffy longterm deals and this isn’t one of them.

Fox, who just won the Norris trophy, doesn’t need to take less than Trouba to be a team guy. He’s worth more than 9.5m, he doesn’t have to make himself more of a bargain to create cap space either.

The Toronto contracts are worse because those AAV seemed high enough to me, even now, to get more UFA years than just one (Matthews) or two (Marner).

The Fox’s 7 years/9.5m includes 4 UFA years.

Heiskanen’s 8 years/8.45m also includes 4 UFA years.

Werenski’s 6 years/9.583m includes 5 UFA years.

McAvoy’s 8 years/9.5m includes 6 UFA years.

Makar’s 6 year/9m only has 1 UFA year.

Look at the screen name of the guy you are responding to, though. He's a Makar fanboy who thinks Makar is the better player. That Fox is paid more than Makar actually offends this dude.

Here's the thing, though. If you're not going to pay the reigning Norris winner who is looking like he'll contend for the trophy yet again this year, who are you going to pay? Not sure anyone is really worth a contract if that's not a guy you open the checkbook for.

I think it's a fair contract.

Not sure where people are getting this "hometown discount" talk from. He got paid a lot (and rightly so).

Fox is better defensively than Dahlin. He's also on par with Makar. Fox is an elite level stud, even though Hedman should have won the Norris last year.

It's funny how many people opine about contracts given to players they have maybe watched once in a youtube video.

Fox is the smartest player I have seen in the last 20+ years. He thinks the game differently, it's amazing to watch.

He took a discount, not as much as we're taking reading some of these horrendously dumb takes but a discount nevertheless.

Is it a tremendous discount? In today's dollars probably not, in future dollars heck yes.

Yeah how could there possibly be people disagreeing your take after comments like this.

I'd understand if it's one of the smartest in the last 20+ years, but definitely Fox is the smartest? Nahhhhh.
