Not gonna lie, I've never been a fan of that big of a contract given to young players that barely played in the league

I know he won the Norris but I don't know... its a small sample size for that big of a contract

But like I said it's me, doesn't mean it's not gonna be a good contract, I know it's the norm now and I like this way better then give this to a 30 years old dmen for what he's done and regret it 2 or 3 years later

The thing is, those who watch him see that the only thing that can derail this contract is an injury.

His wizardry with the puck on his stick reminds me alot of Zuccarello, only Fox has the advantage of an extra split second coming from behind the play and having the other players in front of his field of vision.

Defensively he approaches situations similar to McDonagh without the advantage of having McDonaghs pure physicality to bulldog a play when needed.

He's not a on domensional player like Ghostisbere, or on the flip side, a Roszival who got lucky a few years as a solid defenceman who put up numbers on outlier years of his career.

Fox is unbelievable and certainly worth it; but I think it's pretty bad GM work to not get a bigger discount.

This guy forced his way onto your team, clearly has no interest in playing anywhere else, so he has ZERO leverage. It's not like you risk losing the player by driving a hard bargain.
This is a ridiculous post.

Sounds fair for a really young D-man who won the Norris last year. Play hardball with him and the next one will cost you way more per year and you'll be paying that price for his early 30's.

Holy cow!
Me thinks the GM's and their salary cap analysts are expecting the cap to jump up significantly sometime soon!

with the Cap being held down from COVID, we didn't get to experience the bump up from adding Seattle. When Seattle finally impacts the income of the league, plus what has been held back, there will be a big jump when everything finally unfreezes.

The min was really 10 mil + so Drury did get the discount.

In no way am I downplaying how good Fox is, I don't watch a ton of Ranger games (few here and there) but you guys do so I'll take you word on him. I just still find it funny people act like Nurse is a 6 million dollar dman and is massively over paid.
I think Nurse is a good player but if he's getting 9.25m x 8 then IMO it's inarguable that Fox at 9.5 x 7 is a discount. That's all I'm saying.

Great deal for a great player. No criticism from me.

BUT.....

As of next year, the Rangers will have more than 44M tied up in just 5 key players.

There better be as many threads the from internet "experts" as there were for the Leafs.

;)

I love when these big contract threads end up pages of arguing comparable contracts. If Edmonton fans are happy with the contract they give Nurse, who cares? If we NYR fans are good with Fox getting this money after 134 games played, who cares if it's more or less than some other player got?

Fox got paid. Now don't pull a Zibanejad and think all you have to do is show up.

Oh, come on. They can fit in 1 more star player before comparing them. :)

It's going to be tough but with Laf and Kakko not really doing much, they have a get out of jail free card with those contracts not breaking them.

I guess you should have kept Deangelo too and have another point producer. Both are good offensively and are subpar to average defensively. Then you can have two guys making 9.5 million, SWEET! Add Trouba to that trio of guys who can’t shut any team down. Have 8 guys take up 90%+ of your cap and sign AHL guys to 8 year contracts like Goodrow and enforcers to fill the roster…
Fox is not subpar to average defensively. He’s without a doubt one of the best defensively in the league.

Being good both offensively and defensively is not a contradiction. Not sure why HF always assumes that if a defenseman is good offensively, they are automatically bad defensively.

This is a ridiculous post.

I see nothing ridiculous about it. Team with cap problems needs a discount. Player who has no leverage because he’s not going to ask for a trade. Why are you giving him what he got? He’s the best player on the team, but there’s a salary cap, and the team needs some relief. A player who has no leverage is a good place to start.

This is insane. How was the minimum 10M? Look at the comparables. We are all fans of Fox, but that doesn’t mean the player comes before the team. Makar was 6 years at 9M. That’s the main comparable. Fox’s agent will argue the Norris, but it’s not like there’s a huge difference between the two. An effective GM will be able to get his way and get an agreement on the Makar comparable. If you account for that Makar is locked in for one less year, .5 extra AAV is likely the compromise, so maybe Drury did effectively argue that point. However, it’s certainly not a discount, considering the main comparable.

I'd agree with that. There are other factors between the two contracts but I'd agree Fox gave the Rangers a pretty good deal considering what the D market looked like over the summer.
