I think it’s about 500k too high, but can live with that.
One under appreciated part of Nelson’s game is his durability. Had missed a total of 2 games in the past 5 years. Having someone you can rely on to be in their helps.

I was going to post this...for all the **** i've heard about about Nylander's 6.9...he's 5 years younger and has had 2 seasons better than Brock's career high.

Oh look a leafs fan making an Islanders thread about the Leafs...

This NEVER HAPPENS

Nelson is a 6’3” center who has played in 97.5% of all possible regular season games since coming into the league.

He is capable of playing in all situations in a top six role and averages 20+ goals a year without top powerplay unit ice time.

Last season he had 22 even strength goals which were tied with Barkov, Marner, Monahan, and Panarin to name a few, and did so while shooting very close to his career average.

I’m just not seeing how 6M is a bad deal by any means when you consider the Islanders’ organization depth at the position, the remaining centers available on the market, and how consistent Nelson performs. On top of all that, Trotz loves him.

Nelson looked like he reached another level this year and actually seemed to be getting better as the year went on, whether this was all his motivation for his next contract I do not know, do have a bad feeling he is going to revert to the old Brock but if not it is a solid deal, He was definitely the Isles unsung hero if you ask me this year

You know why people see it as a bad deal?

Because it's the Islanders and they have engrained in their heads that anything the Isles do is bad.

Production like his best season when the Isles were bottom 3rd in goal scoring and had one of the worst PPs in the league?

Lou is going to improve the offense of this team which will improve scoring for everyone.

But i get it. It's a lot easier to go to Hockeydb.com and look up his stats than follow the lowly Islanders.

A career year in a season where he needs a new contract - we’ve seen this plenty of times.

His previous several seasons he’s looked disinterested and unmotivated. Good for 20ish goals and 45ish points a year. That’s the norm for him, not last season’s showing.

That norm isn’t worth 6M. If he continues to play like last season, it’s a fine contract. If he regresses, which is what is more likely to happen statistically and logically, it’s a bad contract.

40 point player with one 53 point season gets 6 million long term

cant wait for the lockout
20+ goal scorer for his career.

Played mostly bottom 6 minutes prior to this year. Not his fault the cruddy Isles bottom 6 players from 2010 on couldn't score on his passes.

He excelled in his top 6 role this year

Maybe repeating what others have said, but Nelson led Isles' forwards in ice time this past season. Trotz really likes him. And I suspect Lou/Trotz were willing to bet his 53 points under Trotz is a better indication of his value than his prior seasons under Cappy and Weight (ie., AHL-level coaches). In other words, if Trotz can't coach Nelson to similar seasons, the Isles have bigger problems than overpaying Brock Nelson.

This was a great signing by Lou. Brock has blossomed into a real scoring threat once he gained his man strength and along with it his confidence. He had a great year and a great playoff run. Absolutely they needed to resign this guy and the contract is quite fair given the Islanders flexible cap position.
