Meh, i'm not surprised at this deal, nor do i think its overly awful its just where the market is right now, 6 million is the new 4 mill, 7 is the new 5 etc... This is how it is now, it will take time but people will get used to it.

40 point player with one 53 point season gets 6 million long term

cant wait for the lockout

So let me get this straight.

It’s fair for HF to make conclusions on players based on they performed under an organization ran by Garth Snow, Doug Weight, and Jack Capuano, and then HF turns right around collectively agrees that the Islanders were a joke of a franchise under Snow, Weight, and Capuano?

That doesn’t make sense.

  • The Islanders did in fact pay Nelson based on his career year and not on his previous production
  • Nelsons most productive season offensively was under Trotz in a defensive structured system where the team scored less goals then any of the Isles teams Brock played for since his rookie year
  • Trotz is signed 4 more years and seems to really like Nelson as a person and player

Nelson always showed streaks of being a better player, but never became that player under Capuano or Weight. He's in very good hands and provided the Isles get a better 2C, Nelsons skillset makes him an easy slot in as a 2LW or 1LW for Barzal if Isles cant find better wingers for the top line. He's also barely missed any hockey - 82, 81 , 81, 82, 82 GP in the last 5 seasons.

In summary this deal is based on ...

  • Versatility - Nelson can be slotted in on lines 1-3 as a C or LW
  • Durability - Nelson has a track record of playing full seasons without being sidelined due to injury
  • Security - there is no guarantee the Isles could fill his VOID via FA, possible but not certain which leads me to my final point
  • Clarity - filling a top-6 roster spot for a set amount of dollars gives Lou a much better idea of what he has to work with and which boxes are checked/unchecked

I am betting on Nelson progressing, not regressing, don't think that happens on Trotz watch.

Only people defending this contract are isles fans lol
How many times have you seen Nelson play?

Do you have any substantial thought as to why his stats are better this season versus previous seasons?

Actually, I know your answers already.

"Only when the Islanders play the Habs."

"No, but Islanders are bad, Canadian hockey media told me so this contract must be bad!"

Who at least WON a playoff round this year, unlike the team in your profile . . . now go back to your board, I still remember trolling rules being in effect.
How is this trolling? Because i'm a Leafs fan i'm not allowed to comment? Gee....sorry.

Being too lazy to look it up but I think Nelson was the only Islander forward that ACTUALLY improved his point totals under Trotz year one.

He'd easily have gotten 7 on the open market. What a surprise, a leafs fan with some shade.

Lol no

JVR signed a $7m x 5 year deal with Philly last year after a 36-18-54 contract year and a two-year average pace of 32 goals and 58 points per 82 games.

Nelson's career best is 25-28-53 in 82 games last season and is one year removed from a 19-16-35 season. He doesn't have enough track record as a point-producer to command $7m annually.

In fact, I bet no other team would sign him for $6M on the open market.

People calling Nylander overpaid smh.

This is a rough contract for a middle of the road 2C.

Maybe a bit high but not like the Isles had much of a choice. Also not like they're in a cap crunch or even nearing one unless they throw mega bucks at Panarin. Nelson is a pretty smart player, those types usually age well.

That's the market for UFA centers and really always has been. Kevin Hayes is about to get a nice chunk himself I bet.

My favorite comments are the dummies taking his career average and saying 'WTF, how he get so much money?'.

If you saw Brock Nelson play before Trotz and with Trotz, they are entirely different players.

Ah yes, the second best center on the market who came off a 53 point, 25 goal season in the most defensively strict system in the game wouldn't have gotten 7M per.

You may want to have a closer look at Nelson's career stats. He's a 27-year-old perennial 40-point player with a 53-point career year in his pocket.

I feel like I just time traveled to 2009.

Ahh, back when you had Tavares.
