a paul byron but double of his salary lol
you wot mate? Byron is a winger, is 5'9, and his career year (2016–17) was significantly less productive than Nelson's, whose best season was last season.

itt a lot of people who know nothing about Brock Nelson. Nellie is a good two way center, young, wins a ton of faceoffs, and his career year coincides with our new coach (suggesting he wasn't properly utilized as a third line winger the last few years).

I mean if we can just make baseless comparisons that don't make any sense, can I say that Cizikas is a McDavid type player? Because it would be cool to say our fourth line center is like McDavid.

So he’s being paid off of one season during a contract year?

No, he's being paid off what he showed under the first real coach of his career and the first time he has been allowed to play Center and only center as his dedicated position. He didn't all of a sudden put in more effort because it was his contract year. He always had the potential to do what he did last year but was poorly coached and used. There is a reason Isles fans are all supporting this deal. Those who are judging by just looking at stats on a paper aren't exactly the most reliable evaluators. He is a solid two way #2 center in a market that is poor for centers.

He’s got below average defensive metrics, 27yo and sub 50% faceoffs career.

From NHL.com Brian Compton

"Barry was huge," Nelson said. "Right from Day One, he stressed there could be more of an opportunity for me. He was a big reason why we had the success that we did.
"Everybody was on the same page. I can't say enough about [general manager] Lou [Lamoriello] and Barry and the success that we had this year and what's ahead."

Decent deal. Don't think the isles could've signed any of the better ufas anyway. They have a known commodity signed trhu is late 20s easily 30s. Probably for .5-.75m extra because all the years are ufa.

Even if this is true, so what? NYI isn't against the cap and it's fine to overpay slightly for good talent.

You don't win in the league by having the lowest payroll.

If he continues to play the way he has this season then it’s a solid deal. But there is always a danger that he doesn’t. It’s not a bad anchor contract, just could’ve been a bit cheaper. That’s all.

So Hayes is really going to get that close to 7 million'ish contract he wants? I think that's an overpayment for Nelson, but I've never thought much of him to be honest. They're in a position where they need a #2 center and after making it to the second round, it's hard to just let players walk.

Which will make Nelson’s contract look even better because he’s arguably the better player. Certainly the better more consistent goal scorer.

Imagine paying Lee and Nelson 13M long term and thinking you are better off without Tavares at 11M long term.
You say that as if the team intentionally let JTraitor walk to sign Lee and Nelson.

Jtraitor himself decided to walk. Wasn't a team decision. It's a sunk cost now and team has to move forward with what is controllable.

So he’s being paid off of one season during a contract year?

MORE POSTING WITHOUT KNOWING THE CONTEXT! YAY!

Remember last time he has a contract year? Of course you don't. But Isles fans do.

I'm not going to say I'm pleased with 6/36 for Nelson, but I'm happy that NYI have a plan and are sticking to it. They looked at the market, decided that C is the position they absolutely could not afford to go to the UFA market without filling, and did what they had to do. Y'all want to make claims without context, fine. Doesn't bother me. Duchene was not going to NYI, and the team was happier with Nelson in hand and Hayes in the bush than going in hoping to get one of the two. What are the alternatives? Trading for Adam Henrique for 2 years less term? Not a bad idea. But what would it cost?

Securing #2C was the first goal of the offseason. I'm not sure how NYI's remaining priorities are ordered, but I'm guessing that signing Lehner is next. I think if Lee wants Nelson's contract too, he's got a deal, but I don't think he's going to make much more with NYI or the deal would already be done. Trading Nick Leddy is another part of NYI's offseason that we can expect.

As a NYI fan, I'm happy that the team is chipping away, and we're not going into the UFA period with total uncertainty.

The same people who are criticizing this deal would be the same one’s criticizing Lamoriello if he let Nelson walk and replaced him with Brassard/Spezza.

Typical HfBoards thread.

'Your team just signed that guy to that contract? LOL It's gonna be a....let's see....oh wait, I know.....an ALBATROSS!'
Typical NYI related thread

*NYI do something*
Other fans: I don't care what they did, I know it's bad hahahaha
*NYI fans try to reasonably educate other fans*
Other fans: blah blah blah nananana I can't hear you, TV told me Islanders are bad, they are so going to regress to last place next season
