This will come back to haunt the Isles. Just you wait... you can't pay 6 million to players who have scored at a career average pace of 40 pts a season... especially when they're already 27. Yikes.

Actually... We can and we will :sarcasm:

Nelson is not a guy I want as a 2c.

6 million is easily 2c money, so this could definitely backfire.. could be fairly soon too.

In all honesty with an 85M cap, I would consider higher end 2nd line center to be more in the 7-8M range. Bozak for instance got 5M

Worth noting that his stats this year put him squarely in the middle of the 2C group, so 6 mil is probably right for an average 2C UFA.

What stats are you using? There’s a lot more to a C than points.

49th on points for centers
114th in faceoffs win pct (used 41 games)
T116 hits/per game
T36 in blocks per game
126th in giveaways (from least to most)
26th in takeaways (most to least)

Not a terrible deal, but i don't think it's all that good either.

Nelson really thrived being the 2C with Tavares gone instead of getting bounced around the lineup like he was prior. 50 points, solid defensively. Assuming he sustains his production from the past season then this deal is alright.

Bozak also has put up 50 point pace pretty consistently throughout his career while Nelson is more a 40ish point guy (albeit younger).

Well I'm definitely not using hits or blocks.

If he continues his play this season then it's a good deal. If he plays like he did every season prior then it's a really bad deal. I think the former is more likely than the latter, which makes it a decent signing.

Well I'm definitely not using hits or blocks.

But points is such a limited metric to use. Almost of his stats point being a low 2C high 3C that’s why I dislike the deal. In the grand scheme of things it’s not going to kill the Isles upfront but it costs cap flexibility down the road and there’s not much relief if it goes bad.

Which will make Nelson’s contract look even better because he’s arguably the better player. Certainly the better more consistent goal scorer.
Better goal scorer, yeah. I wouldn't say he's arguably the better player. To each their own though.

The same people who are criticizing this deal would be the same one’s criticizing Lamoriello if he let Nelson walk and replaced him with Brassard/Spezza.

My only concern (well, not "concern" since they're a rival team) is this makes it clear Lou's not going to upgrade the 2C spot with someone better. Highly doubtful he'd pay Nelson that much with the intention of still bringing in a better 2C and having $6 million tied up in a 3C.

It goes back to my question: is Nelson good enough to be a 2C on a Cup winner? Based on history (ie. Cup winners), unless you've got a guy like Patrick Kane riding shotgun on that line, I don't know if he is.

Seems high. Although probably more of a risk signing or trading for a comparable player instead of just paying him 6.

Doubt years 4 - 6 will be great but who knows what the cap will be then.

Brock - listen Lou I know you weren't here but look at what that turd Andrew Ladd is getting paid and he can't skate, score, pass,or stay on the ice. What's your offer?
I was thinking he would get the same as the Josh Bailey deal. The UFA holds all the cards. Good for Brock. He had his best year at the right time just like Bailey. Pay the man or he can wait till July 1st . Personally I feel better he is locked up. The Isles don't go the UFA route and when we did we got Andrew Badd. I say it's a win for both sides .

So...we don't/won't have an 85m cap.
Bozak is a low end 2c.
And Nelson is worse than bozak.

Thanks for proving my point that Nelson is likely overpaid. And this isn't me hating on the Islanders at all.

On a completely different note, LouLam obviously has no issue overpaying vet guys.
