Seems pretty steep for a guy who has averaged 21 goals / 40 points on his career and will be 28 by puck drop this year.

I was told Lou bent players over and got them to sign sweetheart deals because of his experience.
Also Brock Nelson kind of sucks.

That is a terrible contract. He is what he is at this stage of his career. He's a 2nd liner and probably a 3rd sooner rather than later.

Interesting points of view about this deal. I guess time will tell. Happy for Nelson and I hope he proves to be worth it. By the way, liked the joke about the agent deserving a pat on the head. That was funny.

On a 6 year term.

At 7 years, he's at nearly 8M, and if he signs with CBJ for an 8th year, they project him at nearly 9M

They've come within 400K of every extension signed so far
So they have the average going up the longer the term gets, for all UFA years? Wtf?

Pretty steep. It's a fair deal if he plays like last year, but given his age and play history, it seems likely it was a career year.

One 50 point season in a contract year and they give him 6 year deal paying him what established 55+ point scorers make?

Pretty bad deal for the ills. I’m shocked so many are defending it. He clearly had a career year and fans would have no problem if he was moved prior to this season.

Crazy guys like Hall getting 6 mil per a few years ago was wild move

Now friggen Nelson is getting 6 lmao

How about from this point forward in the thread no one is allowed to complain about this deal unless they also give a DETAILED and REALISTIC way the Isles could've gotten a #2 center this offseason?

It’s lazy to say 6m is too much and then compare a pending ufa to a contract an rfa signed. Theres a huge difference. The non-rfa contracts of forwards making exactly 6 per:
Okposo, nelson is better at this point
Backes, not even close
Lucic...nope
Saad, close but he’s never had more than 53 pts either. Edge to saad for being more consistent.
Jordan staal, edge to Nelson at this point but close.
Turris, close. Probably better than nelson though.
Loui Eriksson, brock is better right now.
Hall, lol wish I could omit this one.

Kind of all over the place in terms of what 6 mil ufa deal will get you. An mvp to the a ghost of a big man in Lucic.

If you say nelson wouldn’t have gotten 6 mil minumum on July 1, then you’re being disingenuous. Centers are always going to get premium money. UFAs get paid above value. RFAs usually get a more team friendly deal...usually.

It's this simple...

garth snow was horrible. Left the Isles a very flawed roster when he was fired a year ago. When Tavares left it was basically Barzal and Nelson in terms of reliable top-6 centers in the entire organization. So if the Isles get Nelson walk they weren't getting Duchene and would've had to pay someone like Hayes more than this to keep from having a GAPING hole after Barzal.

So Lou did what he needed to do - Perhaps not what he wanted to do.

We're all reeling from the wang/snow years and just trying to pick up the pieces. This team (with Trotz behind the bench) is never going to be bad enough to get a top-5 elite/cornerstone prospect, so it's going to have to try to piece together a Cup contender other ways. Despite Nelson being a flawed and sometimes very annoying player, losing a good 2nd line center for nothing and with no replacement in sight would have set the Isles back a lot further than this contract ever could.

Lou is just another Phil Jackson. We won't be a cup contender anytime soon with moves like this.
Lou had an entire Summer and regular season to fix the forward situation via trade. Blaming Snow is a cop out.
This take is absurd. The Islanders didn't need to re-sign Nelson for six years. Could have let him walk and signed a cheaper replacement or just move Bailey to Center or call up Koviula. This is Lou being unprepared.
If Lou isn't going after Duchene or Panarin than why do we need him?
How is this any better than what Garth Snow has done?
At least Snow would have traded Enerle at the deadline. Awful contract that will end up an albatross. To say the Islanders had no choice is ridiculous. What if Nelson didn't sign?

Then what choice do we have?
You think we are going into the season without a second line Center.

Nelson is not a guy I want as a 2c.

6 million is easily 2c money, so this could definitely backfire.. could be fairly soon too.

Totally agree. Lou is paying Nelson considerably more than Wild Bill and Marchessault for instance. No one thinks Nelson is the better player.

My only concern (well, not "concern" since they're a rival team) is this makes it clear Lou's not going to upgrade the 2C spot with someone better. Highly doubtful he'd pay Nelson that much with the intention of still bringing in a better 2C and having $6 million tied up in a 3C.

It goes back to my question: is Nelson good enough to be a 2C on a Cup winner? Based on history (ie. Cup winners), unless you've got a guy like Patrick Kane riding shotgun on that line, I don't know if he is.

That remains to be seen. I’m curious to see what Lamoriello does to improve the rest of the forwards. Nelson was one of the few forwards who improved statistically under Trotz while team scoring dramatically dipped. If NYI doesn’t re-sign Lee, Nelson takes over his spot on the powerplay, and his wings are upgraded we may see Nelson’s scoring go up again. The icetime should be there and Trotz has him shooting the puck more.
