It is not an omg the sky is falling bad deal like some are making it out to be, but it isn’t fair or decent ether. Slight overpayment and a bunch of term.

This is a big contract. It seems that contracts are inflating across the board though and fans on here have a hard time adjusting.

Bingo. Fans always have problems adjusting and get stuck thinking $6 million one year is the same as $6 million last year or the year before. The cap is moving and so are the amounts you have to pay for a player.

Lou is just another Phil Jackson. We won't be a cup contender anytime soon with moves like this.
Lou had an entire Summer and regular season to fix the forward situation via trade. Blaming Snow is a cop out.
This take is absurd. The Islanders didn't need to re-sign Nelson for six years. Could have let him walk and signed a cheaper replacement or just move Bailey to Center or call up Koviula. This is Lou being unprepared.
If Lou isn't going after Duchene or Panarin than why do we need him?
How is this any better than what Garth Snow has done?
At least Snow would have traded Enerle at the deadline. Awful contract that will end up an albatross. To say the Islanders had no choice is ridiculous. What if Nelson didn't sign?

Then what choice do we have?
You think we are going into the season without a second line Center.
At least Lou is not Glen Sather. Josh Bailey is not an NHL caliber Center, which is why he is now on a wing. Who says Lou is not still going after the big fish? Lou's time in the bathroom is better than anything Garth Snow ever did.
Pining for the days of Snow running this team is victim's mentality.

One of worst contracts I've seen in a while. Not surprised. Lou has been a senile, bad GM for a long time. Only good move he made in years was hiring the coach last year. This guy lost it a long time ago when the clutch and grab era ended.
Lou is gonna Lou.
Hickey, Komarov, Marleau, Zaitsev' Kovalchuk. Get used to it.

Talk like this is so rich - you guys simultaneously complain about being unfairly maligned, and this is how you carry yourself ? Yeesh

Ahhh come on. I thought we were past this!! I'm just teasing . The other posters were dishing it out .if you guys tanked and we're out of the playoffs I wouldn't tease.

To those who say this is too much, in the last year or two, what pending UFA top 6 centers have signed for less?

Please don't remind me! I have to have faith this guy knows what he's doing! :ha:

Seriously this was a fair to good signing. There's no doubt he has one of the best shots on the Islanders when sharp shooters is what we need right now. He's blossomed physically and his compete level has been outstanding. I think it was a confidence thing just like with Bailey. Sometimes it takes a few years but the Isles have been good at grooming these guys along.

Seems to be about .5m over the going rate for his caliber player. Far from the worst contract in the league, but I wouldn’t want Nelson on that contract.

People saying we should have instead traded for turris....

Nope!

The trade we might have considered would be for Henrique *if* he were available. Basically similar production and value, with 2 years less term.

Seems to me that trading assets (i.e. players with term or prospects) makes that a wash at best.

If you think he can repeat some 50 point seasons, then it is.

It's a risk, but a decent bet for the Islanders, since you're getting 3-4 of his best years to come.

There is a growing body of evidence that puts offensive players' prime right in their mid 20-s. I highly doubt Nelson's best years to come are in front of him. Maybe 1 or 2, if they're lucky.

A New Look at Aging Curves for NHL Skaters (part 2)

“While confirming conventional wisdom that players peak in their late 20s, the study proves it is wishful thinking for managers to expect a player in his mid-20s to continue improving significantly,” says Brander, an economist. “The vast majority of players are at 90 per cent of their best by age 24, although there are a few late bloomers.”

People will say this is too high, but $6m for a young UFA 2nd liner is what it takes these days.

He will be 28 next season. That's not young for the NHL.

I don't think it's a shock he got what he did. However, giving a mediocre 28 year old a 6 year contract is a gamble that likely will not end positively.

Honestly, after thinking about it, I don't think it's too bad of a deal. It kind of reminds me of the talk around Kadri's last deal where the Leafs were betting on him taking another step forward. I'd say 5.5 mil would've been the sweet spot due to his somewhat lackluster production history but if he can keep playing like he did last year, this should be a fine contract.

Kadri was 25 at the time
