He looked like a different player this season. That could be the result of one or a combination of:

1. Contract year
2. Barry Trotz

If we get the guy we saw in 2018-19 for a few years. Fair deal.

Not great but not horrible if he plays like last season. He had a good year and so did his team, obviously was gonna be rewarded for it. Might look different half way threw though.

I won't say this is a bad deal.. Islanders fans might be happy and that's ok. I will just say if my team signed him to that contract, I would not be happy.
Well yeah, your team has a dearth of centers. Islanders can't afford to hope we sign duchene / hayes to replace Nelson.

When your six highest paid forwards, who are nearing (Nelson exempt here) or beyond age 30, are Brock Nelson (6 years), Andrew Ladd (4 years), Josh Bailey (five years), Cal Clutterbuck (three years), Casey Cizikas (two years), and Leo Komarov (three years) you have every right to question the longterm strategy of the front office.

This is an odd way to look at it

About as hard as understanding a 6x6 contract is overpaying a 45-55 point player i guess......

That’s a 2nd line player. We’re at the point where players are making 10+ million per. Leafs are gonna have 3 of them. 6x6 for a 2nd line center who’s good defensively and consistently puts up 20+ goals is a fair deal in today’s game.

I think Nelson's probably better than his points indicate. He arguably got overpaid. But he's a center and an UFA. He was always going to be paid a lot.

Better hope he's the Nelson of last season and not previous seasons though, because the contract can end up being pretty bad.

Definitely not "good value." This is an overpayment by $500K-$1 million. That's not something that will cripple a team though, so if that's what they had to do to keep him from hitting UFA, then I get it.

That's crazy. Nelson is a career 40 point player who had a career year 50 points in his contract year at age 28, and now has a 6x6 contract going into his 30s. Yikes.

hahahahahah another sour leafs fan.
How am i sour? Just because i'm a Leafs fan doesn't skew my opinion...you just paid a consistant 40ish point 27 year old 6 million for 6 years...that seems a tad high. I'd say the same thing no matter what team signed him.

Only people defending this contract are isles fans lol

Because everyone else just screams "stats stats stats" and points to his career numbers - no talk about his defense or his overall current value to the team. Isles fans would have been devastated last year at this time if this was the contract that was signed. Now that we have seen what a year under a real coach has meant to him and with consistent time as the #2C instead of being shifted around like a utility player, we a re happy. We recognize that the prior years stats under poor coaching without a defined role aren't as meaningful as what he did last year putting up over 50 point as a #2 center on a low scoring team. But sure,. other fans know more because they see him a few times a year and look at his stats online.

It will start to cripple them when they do it for Brock Nelson, Josh Bailey, Andrew Ladd, Casey Cizikas, Cal Clutterbuck, and Leo Komarov. Those are some big bets on players sustaining the best years of their careers or, even worse, paying for their past performance which is in some cases in the rearview already.

1. I wouldn't be surprised if Ladd is bought out if we get another set of compliance buyouts, if he doesn't I wouldn't be surprised if he finds himself on the LTIR alot

2. Cizikas had his best season ever last year

He would have gotten the same or more on the open market. Isles need his services as the other Centers in the UFA crop are not what Isles need. He's a UFA. They all get more than what they should. No other UFA center would have filled the role Nelson did this past year(not counting MD in this.)
