Yeah, I understand that. It just makes it more palatable for the Isles to sign him for this more than it means that the contract itself is fine.
I mean yeah it would be nice if it was a mil and a year or two less but Hayes could def get more and Duchene should be good for at least 8 per, right? And if we don't get any of those guys we're screwed, with nobody in the pipeline to replace him (this is an issue we have to fix in this draft or the next one). Not to mention that Trotz has been raving about Nelson since day one, so we kinda had to keep him.

Teravainen just signed for $5.4. Maybe time for Lou to retire.
He was an RFA. If he keeps up a close to PPG pace he'll be due a lot more in his next contract and we'll be having the same discussion over whether it's too much for a player who will be in his decline.

lol. guy's a 40 point player with one 50 point season when scoring is up.

waaah. Actually according to isles beat writer, Nelson would have gotten 7+ on market.
That doesn't make this deal any better, it just means someone else would have signed him to an even worse deal.

Its like eating a rotten apple and justifying it to yourself because it hasn't gotten moldy yet. Still not going to feel good going down.

Kevin Hayes next deal will indicate if this is a good contract. If Hayes get $7m per year for 5 to 6 years then the Isles made a shrewd move to lock Brock up this early.
I am sure Hayes is quite happy now as their numbers are almost identical over the last few years with a slight edge to Hayes.

Islanders are really weak at center so I think this was sort of a must sign. As much as I rather sign Duchene to a 7 year 10M deal I don't see that happening so it was either trade for a center or resign Nelson

TTs contact is for 5 years and he gave up 2 UFA years.

Should've waited for the UFA interview period, taken a chance to at least talk to Duchene and Co.

They didn't get a bargain on this contract, that's for sure

I dont think this is a great deal long term but the islanders have so much cap space that it probably wont matter but then again they do have some nice prospects coming. /shrug

Im not a huge fan of him but seems shockingly lower than i thought he would get... Seeing how contracts are being thrown around nowadays that is

The Islanders fan base is the first to kill their team for bad contracts. The fact that pretty much all of us Islanders fan (who watched this guy play for years with poor coaching and now see how he changed under real coaching) think this is a good deal says a lot more than what a bunch of fans from other fan bases think. All you get with other fan bases is stats, stats, stats, ignoring defense and intangibles. Nelson at 6 per for 6 is a good deal for the Islanders. Very little doubt about it.
