...anyone have thoughts on a trade for Barrett Hayton from Utah??... :dunno:

I touted Hayton to go to Habs in the KK draft. Saw him a ton in junior and liked him.

Expected more by this point but playing in ‘Zona couldn’t have been good.

He seems to be doing better in Utah and would be an OK 2C who I think would thrive in Habs’ hockey environs.

As someone posted in another thread, Sam Bennett (!!!) but Hayton wouldn’t cost as much/seems realistic.

On the other hand, the management is on record saying that this upcoming offseason is going to be very important, so it's not unreasonable to expect that they're going to pull every lever to pry that top 6 center. I wonder if we might see a player/prospect moved that will shock us.

Same. Gotta give to get. Other teams won’t give us their good centers for magic beans picks + Mailloux. I could see them exploring the trade value of Slaf or Guhle to get us a strong 1-2 punch down the middle. Especially Guhle with his injury history.

I wonder what kind of center we could get for a package built around either Slaf/Guhle, with adds-on like Beck/Kapanen/Mailloux/1 of our 2 1st.

I don’t think getting guys like Beniers or Johnston are realistic tbh. I feel like they’ll go for someone older like an O’Reilly or Schenn, hopefully I’m wrong.

Not a bad target. Good stopgap that's young. He won't get in the way of players like Hage, but those players will also have a decent veteran to complete with for a roster spot.

So our problem is managment drafting bad during a rebuild? Yikes, it hurts.
Drafting hasn't been bad under Hugo, IMO. Hutson, Reinbacher, Demidov, Fowler, Hage all look to be excellent picks. The jury is still out on whether Slaf was the best choice as a #1OA pick, but big guys take longer to develop.

No team hits on 100% of their draft picks, but around here anything less than that is considered a disaster by some posters.

Drafting, contract management and development are strengths of this new regime.
Inexperienced coaching, Identifying the right player and player evaluation need some improvement for sure (Dach, Newhook, Barron, Kovacevic, ...)

Why would he sign for only four years if it amounts to what he would get in 5 years elsewhere?

This will be his last big contract and he can sign for 7 guaranteed years elsewhere.
He will be 32, after a 4 year contract. He can still sign another contract.
