Noah Dobson

Well you have the elitist of the elite everyone according to a few people (mainly Crypto and his special critical thinking skills) so apparently it was the perfectly built team. Lead by generational talent Laf. Soon enough we’ll see one of them again from some poster.

Barzal, Dobson and Holmstrom’s play the last couple games show he’s trying to be young and hungry. They however rely on the aging players too much to fill spots. It’s time to see what the roster can do without Matt and Cal for a couple games.
Damn i just live in the head of you huh? Thankfully it’s rent free!

Haven't really followed him. Your saying his offence not defence has been his calling card in new york?

We are definitely seeing some improvements on the defense side this year but for the past few years he has committed his share of bonehead plays in his own zone. Might just be a case of physically maturing and being harder to knock off the puck. Not saying he is Victor Hedman, but I remember Hedman not being the greatest defensively before he turned 25 so....

Is this good? Who’s Denis Potvin? Was he any good?

Defence always takes awhile for D-men to dial in. Interesting though, I had the impression he was more of an All Defence with less Offence, and more defence.

I would say up to this point(his entire nhl career) his offense seems to be better then I thought it would be, but his all around play is a bit disappointing. As you say though most defensemen take awhile to mature.

His shot for starters is way better then I thought and he seems to have a good mind for carrying the puck

I mean you’ve spent more time in Islanders related threads than your own team. I think of you more like that wart that just wont go away more than anything.
Odd because i didnt even see your silly post until 6 weeks after. Guess i’m really spending so much time in Isles threads. But yet you’re the one trying to troll me in threads i’m not even apart off. Very sad.

I’m thinking this has to be defensemen only right? I can’t imagine Trottier didn’t.

Edit: Trottier definitely did, so must be defensemen. Which is still good, but the list of Isles defensemen after Potvin who could put up big points is pretty slim. I guess Persson had some good years.

He's the closest thing to a young Pietrangelo that you'll find in the NHL. No elite trait (aside from Hockey IQ) yet very good all across the board makes an excellent overall package.

Should have gone top-5 in the 2018 Draft, RHD's like him are impossible to get unless you draft them high.
My comparable for him at the draft was Pietrangelo and really hoped the Oilers would take him when he dropped. Many of the rankings at the time had Dobson/Hughes/Bouchard ranked the same and I found Dobson to be the most complete of the bunch at the time.

At least neither of us ended up with Boqvist who was also in that bunching

I always saw him as a tier below. Surprisingly, I also didn't think Hughes would be as good as the other two but he has sure proven me wrong. He looked like he ways playing pond hockey in college.

I felt the same way about Hughes. I didn’t think he would be a bust like Ryan Murphy but I didn’t think he’d be this elite. Hes a beast

it's good to see him being dominate. Many NYR fans wanted him, but the smartest guys in the room said "Hold my beer while we drat Kravtsov". Either way, good to see him being the player most expected, even if it's for a rival. He's an absolute gem to have on your team.

I’m not an Islander fan, but just an observer who is noticing that Noah Dobson is developing into a fine young defenseman, and being right-handed makes it even sweeter. At this point in his development, he is the second best all-round defenseman from the 2018 draft after Rasmus Dahlin. Although I’m not comparing the two stylistically, is it safe to say that Dobson is the best defender that the Islanders have had SINCE Denis Potvin?
There’s this guy named Quinn Hughes who was drafted in 2018 too

Absolutely. That being said, the past couple of weeks (months maybe) he's been better, much better defensively. It's Mayfield and Romanov that have been tire-fires.

Last year Dobson started off with something like 10g in his first 25 games, cooled off and the defensive warts reared their ugly head. Has a tendency to be shaken easily by back pressure.

The last 3 OT wins alone have been set up by Dobson’s awareness which is nuts. A far step from the guy who would get caught on the wrong side of the ice due to overcommitting defensively (the Scott Mayfield specialty).

To this point the best part of his game is transition, followed by play in the offensive zone. Last year he was offensively inconsistent (see NYI's PP). So far he's been good on the PP, but we'll see - he was good to start the season last year, too. What's really changed is that he's been playing much more confidently in transition defense - playing with tighter gaps. And yeah, that plays right into his strength. His strength, and endurance is improving as it should for his age. Like Pietrangelo, I think his in-zone offensive ability will always trail behind his transition game, and I think his defensive ability will end up being very good.
