Well, the context here is Nicholas Robertson is actually a 2nd round pick from 2019. His career arc spiked in development the first year post draft but has been a disrupted since the pandemic, but otherwise expectations were accelerated, only to hit a traffic jam.

Look at other highly regarded guys like Shane Pinto or Bobby Brink from that draft and round and nobody's disappointed in their development. 5th overall Alex Turcotte has done even less and I don't think people are in a panic.

That said, I'm not crazy about the player type specifically. Honestly, there's a lot I don't like. I don't know if he's processing the game or understanding his role or what kind of ground rules the Leafs are setting for him. But from a developmental view, if he needs more time, it's quite natural at this stage.
The thing I don't particularly care for about his attitude is that he seems to think he knows better than people giving him advice. Hailey said he needed to calm down a bit last year and things will work out. He of course said he has only 1 speed blah blah.... I just think he is in such a rush to become like his big brother that he is missing out on so many things he could be better at. His shot takes FOREVER to get off because he likes to torque it so much....he won't have many clear chances to do that in the NHL...that to me is one of the biggest issues. I also don't think he has good balance or speed for a small guy. I did get surprised on Saturday when I didn't see him fall to the ice as per usual...so maybe the extra weight helps.

Nick's big brother became an established NHLer after his 21st birthday. Nick just turned 21 but remember that he was something like 2 month's premmy. BTW I hadn't noticed how much taller Nick's brother Jason is: 6 inches.

My first son was born 7 weeks early and had the exact same issues that Robby had when he was born. It's tough to watch...and the doctor telling me 3 days into his life that he will be short seemed mean...but accurate. The developmental time that they have to do outside the womb is a real problem for these kids. I am rooting for him in one way but wish he listened to people a bit more and played the way they tell him to.

Both his line mates did him no favors on Saturday. Kerfoot can’t even make a play, don’t get why he’s on this team. He’s soft soft soft.
I agree we need to move on from Kerfoot. Too soft.

And he's a good player. Pretty darn good actually. But imo winning teams don't give a Kerfoot those minutes or that spot in the lineup.

He's talented but he needs to let the game come to him. If he can focus his attention being strong defensively, the rest of it will come.

Confident he can become an NHL player by the end of the year.

If the injuries/pandemic didn’t happen I think he’d be on the team.

Not sure he can understand that concept. His head has always been about being the hero as he grew up. Now he needs to be part of a team, play a role, get your legs in turn to the NHL and play the game. Believe in your skills that will shine through over time.
He is all about being the bright light. Well, his chances look dim in making this team.

I've seen a similar phenomena in my extended family: one cousin well over 6' tall while the other brother low weight early birth under 5'10" but both turned out to be excellent athletes.

Robertson will be fine and mark my words, he’ll be a very good player in this league in a few years. He’s only 21 now. All we heard about after we drafted him was that he was a premature baby, late birthday, etc. he’s barely had any professional development time due to all the injuries he’s faced and even with that, he’s been a very solid scorer at the AHL level. We talk about all of these things but get so impatient when he’s not a 40 goal scorer in the NHL right away.

Not everyone is a star at 19. He’ll be fine and he’ll score goals for us.

With Malgin looking to get a shot on the second line in the next preseason game, Robertson has practice and maybe a 3rd line appearance to make an impression for a last shot with the second line in his last preseason game. If he comes out and shows energy smart play and production on a third/fourth line, he might still have a chance. At this point it might take a dominant performance and multi-goal/point game to supplant Malgin. He’s lucky Gaudette is injured, because as average as he’s looked, it’s been better than Robertson so far. Of the waiver exempt players both Holmgren and Steeves have performed better as well. He’s in tough.

Love to see him play a full season of hockey somewhere.

Evaluate at the end of it.

Good point. He’s been a man without a team for a few years here. Spotlighting here and there and missing so much time to injury.

Hey he was a 2nd rounder. What are the odds they even make it? This is where dumping all those first rounders starts to backfire huge on Dubas.

Did Nylander become too good to shit on so people just moved on to Kerfoot? Because I swear I am not sure what people see in Kerfoot when they act like he is terrible and soft. Man battles for every puck and can play in a grinding role through to fill in for injuries in a top 6 and look like he at least belongs.

These players are called DEPTH (not 4th liners and extra forwards although they matter too). This means that when Nylander goes out in game 1, we have a player with known chemistry with Tavares waiting and able. Or if things aren't working late in the season, we can mix things up and know he can plug a hole for us where we see it. Oh and did I mention he plays CENTER and has filled in (and looked damn good doing it) for Tavares in the playoffs.

Seriously. No Jarnkrok doesn't make him expendable, they got him because they wish they had 6 kerfoots.

In a normal draft class with a first round pick at the head of class, I guess Nick Robertson could have followed a Jeremy Bracco style promotion from junior to the AHL and been allowed to develop at his own pace. I use Bracco not as an example of a bust, but as a highly productive junior with a not-ideal body type for the pro game who spent three years in the AHL.

Where it went sideways is they tried making him a difference maker in the bubble playoffs, then seemed to miss the WJC on the presumption he was closer to the NHL shortened season than he really was. Mix in some injuries and he just looks like he's massively behind schedule and on his last chance... when he should only be getting his first looks around now.

The AHL has more headhunters than the NHL, it’s not like Robertson was able to avoid injury down there any better than in the NHL.

I think Dubas was looking to trade him if he didn’t get injured. We need some size and grit to compliment all that offense Bunting needs help.

Any updates on him?

100% his season is over?

Life missed a perfect chance to get an extended opportunity to show what he can do and continue his development at the NHL level….
