Indeed!

Wanna hear something really wild?

In German, the word for Hungary is (very similar to Swedish) "Ungarn".

But if you say "the Hungarians", it's "die Ungarn".

Yep. Same word.

And that's the case for the country name for Sweden as well.

There's "Schweden" and "die Schweden".

Not at all confusing, of course.

This is not, however, the rule for all country names and how you refer to people from the respective countries. These are but a few of the exceptions.
another example: the German state of Bavaria - it's "Bayern" and (people) "die Bayern"
there is no logic in German language regarding names of countries and their people.
Austria: "Österreich"-->"die Österreicher"
France: "Frankreich"-->"die Frankreicher"? no!! it's "die Franzosen"!

Always fun to look at these articles every year. And there are actually quite a few other overagers of note for this draft as well as those mentioned here.

This article mentions one I had pointed out earlier this year and well, not because I see him as particularly draft-worthy, but because he's likely on the NYI board for obvious reasons:

Several guys I’m looking at at 49

Nick Lardis LW- goal scorer, plain and simple. Also has good speed. Had an excellent prospect’s game.

Kaspar Hulttunen RW- Had an excellent WU18’s, has good size and a good shot.

Etienne Morin D- I’m hoping he falls to the #49 range. Really good offensive Dman, really takes command of a power play, wants the puck. Also not afraid to hit.

I’ll add some more players I’m looking at, in the next few days.

The Merrimack connection and last name make him a slam dunk. I see it now, when Copponi scores his first “gabagoal”, he’ll be invited to celebrate at Borrelli’s. Bada-bing-bada-boom!

I've been thinking of subscribing to something. I don't know which is better though, EP or McKeens.
I have both for the research I do, I think EP is much more transparent in their process and how they evaluate players. You kind of have to take an average of all the agencies which is kind of what MacKenzie's list is and why its so highly regarded.

If they can get Etienne that'll work. We need that kind of defenseman on this roster badly. Same for Hulttunen.

This should be one of the key hopes and targets.

The guy was looking like a top 25 kid for this draft in the spring of 22.

A very unideal situation at the pro level this year has him more in that 35-50 range now.

Has all the tools to be a beast down the line.

He hasn't dropped as much as Stramel though...

Devon Toews was an overager.
He was also 5'2" at nearly 16, and grew to over 6' by age 20. That's really rare. He grew 2-3" after his draft, and then it wouldn't have been clear at all whether he'd be able to put meat on a stretched out frame. The whole thing is extraordinary, at least it is for hockey players.

In general, I would love to take players who did most of their learning as undersized players, but suddenly caught up. When you're a smaller player, you have to be mentally stronger, and play with more intelligence.

It really is, and it explains a lot, because Toews's game was always projectible. But it's hard to draft a gaunt 5'10" 140ish pound 18 y/o defender who looks like a scarecrow, and only played 1 season in the BCHL. And given the commitment to NCAA & a small frame, it's difficult to pick him in his 2nd year (before his 1st year in the NCAA) when it would seem likely he could stay in the NCAA longer than draft rights.

I'm sure there are other examples of guys like this who were totally off the radar because of extreme late growth. But probably never happened before 1979 when the draft age was 20.

If I'm not mistaken, Julius Erving was 6'1" as he graduated high school.

Pronman has this kid going to the Isles in the latest mock on The Athletic. Very young and apparently moving up on a lot of draft boards. Most of what I've read sounds promising. Curious on the thoughts on this kid from those smarter than I.

Thanks for posting that. I can't really add anything other than to say he's an intriguing package of size and skating and, as you said, really young so that makes his results more impressive and should mean more upside. He fits the mold of the kind of player the Isles have been drafting. But, a caveat is that he's from an area we haven't really been mining.

I genuinely like him as a prospect and saw a lot of him at the U18 Worlds.

BUT he's not a guy I'd use a 2nd rounder on when it's the only pick I've got within the top 110+. There are just going to be far too many guys available at 49 with more marquee track records to this point in time than Pekarcik, who I hadn't heard a soul talk about until the U18 tourney, where he was really quite good as a linemate for Dvorak.

If we had a 3rd rounder, I'd be more open to him there.

If this draft is as stocked as you say where there is that much marquee talent in the 2nd and guys like Pekarcik in the 3rd,would it make sense to trade down from #49 for a 2nd in the low to mid 50s and a 3rd rounder?
