GDT: NHL Draft 2023

NHLRumorsDaily (who is very reputable and has broken a ton of NHL news) mentioned on his podcast this week that the Islanders are one of the teams that Michkov has met with leading up to the draft.

Likely just a formality, but thought that was interesting.

I KNEW IT

Bailey to Columbus for their 1st round pick! Jarmo in win-now mode!

Michkov told all the NHL teams "the Isles or Russia!". Lou's relationship with Fetisov pays dividends!

Wait . . . I'm waking up now . . . damn. That was better than the Sophie Marceau dream . . .

So all the talk about scouts saying he's a real A-hole is just him making teams pass on him till he drops to 49? :naughty:

I hope it turns out better than the last time we drafted a top 5 Russian who dropped....

If Michkov somehow falls to 10 OA passed the Capitals - Blues need a 1C - with TWO other 1sts in round 1, would Blues do a Nelson for 10 OA? Lou drafts MIchkov and uses Nelson's cap savings in FA?

Or if Michkov falls to the Flyers at 7 OA, do Isles dangle Nelson - maybe Isles have to create incentive by taking Hayes.

Pronman conducted a 7 round mock draft for The Athletic.

Here's his thoughts on the Islanders:

I would like to say that I'm not inclined to see any of the final four picks being very likely. Just don't see these guys being Islander-style picks for the current staff. I also don't see some of them going as early as he indicates or whatsoever.

That said, if Riley Heidt is there at 49, you grab him and call it a day.

Looks like Pronman already did.
I’d be shocked if Heidt is there that late. He’s a first round talent for sure.I’d be ecstatic if we had a chance and took him there.

I don’t think Michkov goes past the Flyers, mainly because it’s gives that brand new (and inexperienced) management team (ok, they have a Wang circle of input from Torts…so he has some input) several years to sell patience and the ‘rebuild’ in a market that is notoriously impatient.

Also, sitting behind them are divisional rivals Teams 8 and 9: Washington and Detroit, both have a history with Russian players and can be patient too. I think SJ, MON, and AZ make ‘safer’ bets.

Probably just to check in since no way he falls out of the top 10, and no way do we see him slide to round 2. I think Daniil But is a better Russian for the isles to investigate, especially if he slides. Big left winger, and he could easily come here should Sorokin become the franchise goalie.

Here are a few other names I want to check in on

-Hunter Brzustewicz (decent size, looks like a puck mover, adds a much needed defenseman)
-Charlie Stramel (Can play center)
-Coulsen Pitre
-Kalan Lind

Any of these guys seem like potential guys at #49?

Unless LL does something out of character and somehow trades into the top 5 of the draft.

I'd expect him to be selected somewhere between 90-150.

Dunno what his upside is?

Feels like are a handful of Dmen like him available this week.
Granted I really have never watched him play. But everything I'm reading about him is that he has #1 power play quarterback potential.

An absolute rocket for a shot, moves the puck at a high level, and can hold his own on defense. Only thing that has him slipping is his frame. He's 6'0 160 lbs, so he can get knocked off the puck easily. Just have to hope he grows into his body.

I have a feeling Trotz is going to be an excellent GM. I wish we could have kept him here to be our next GM.

I would love to find our way back into the 1st round and get Yager. Really think hes an underrated prospect.
Would take a miracle but I like Yager.

Granted I'm not keeping count, but is seems like there are about 50 guys who have no chance of slipping out of the 1st round.

The real ones we should keep an eye out for are the russians. Any Russian becomes a big steal for us at #49.
