NHL experimenting with increasing tv timeouts by 30 seconds

Yuval Harari makes a strong argument that we were better off (or at least more sustainable) as semi-agrarian/nomadic folks, but that’s a whole ‘nother matter. All I know is that there’s a “man” worth $400 billion wondering where all the money went. Hmm. Big mystery there.
That's because he wants all the missing money for his next 12 assholically named test tube children

Yeah, that is what we need, longer commercial breaks. All that will happen, is they will indeed increase them by whatever amount and intermissions will magically be the same length. The world won't be happy until there is 60 minutes of commercials and 30 seconds of gameplay and ads literally plastered on 100% of the ice and players tattooing ads on their faces. I fully expect by 2034-35, that players will no longer have names, but will be sponsored names.

Fan Duel wins the 2035 scoring race with 126 pts.

A change no one would even notice in if it wasn’t publicized, but they will bitch about incessantly since it was.

This couldn't be more wrong in the slightest.

They already have commercials built into the games for minor stoppages, and they want the actual commercial break to be even longer? Was that not enough?

Long reviews, more and more commercials, refs continuing to not drop the puck at faceoffs, they're slowing the game down more and more.

Combined with hitting being taken away and a purposeful decrease in fights allowed, the league really wants to kill themselves and decrease interest.

If I wanted a slow and boring sport devoid of physicality, I'd watch the NBA.

They should just do what NASCAR and other racing does and take commercial breaks while game action is still going on at this rate

Reminds me of a “Rocky and Bullwinkle” cartoon where Pottsylvania (homeland of villains Boris Badenov and Natasha) the tv programs are 10 minutes long and the commercials are 50 minutes long.

Should add 80 jersey ads too.

True, but even if it wasn't discussed, it would have a negative effect on the flow of the game to have longer stops in between play. You may not realize it, but you live it.

I thought the prevailing wisdom right now was for advertising money to be dedicated to things that will be in the viewer’s field of vision while watching live play (on-equipment advertising, rink board and on-ice overlays, score bugs) because it’s becoming more and more clear that the ad breaks between play are when people aren’t actually watching the screen. They’re using their phones, they’re grabbing a snack, they’re taking a leak.

Making the in between play breaks longer just further encourages people to … walk away from their tv during a tv timeout because now they have reliably more time to do that away-from-screen thing.

I'll be the first to say that I can't stand commercials, but increased revenue means the salary cap goes up...

At the end of the day, it's all bullshit

So funny, I was watching the game with friends last night and I kept saying, "is it me or has this been a long commercial break?" It was definitely noticeable.

Remember how helmet and jersey ads were only supposed to be a temporary solution because of the loss of revenue during CoVID?

Remember how Bettman said he would fight tooth and nail before NHL jerseys had ads on them?

I don't think they ever said "temporary", it was "on a trial basis"... Temporary would suggest there was a plan for it to be in effect for some period of time and then ended. Trial means that it was put in place to see what the reaction would be and how it would affect revenues, and then determine if it will remain or not. Similar concepts but definitely a difference.

IMO what they should do is shorten commercial breaks during the periods and just extend intermission longer to make up the lost ad revenue.

I'm guessing during the game ads are worth more since it is pretty easy to walk away for the intermission

I am curious how many people actually watch these ads. Last time I had cable I would just start the game late and fast forward through all the commercials.
