That's a fair point lol.

Doesn't detract from the fact that McDavid is more or less a lock for the Lindsay though. You'd be crazy to think he wasn't.

McDavid has some huge defensive warts but his ability to read the ice and make plays at full speed is still something that shocks and awes his peers.

Under Woodcroft his defensive game has improved dramatically. A lot of his "warts" come from years past when he had to cheat for points because if him and Drai didn't score nobody would.

Him being a defensive liability has always been fairly overblown and always said without context.

IMO.

What part of dead puck era almost completely eliminating the likelihood of a player scoring 120+ points do you not understand? All we can do is compare the circumstances and the results where players have hit that mark. Did it not cross your mind that past precedence can be used to explain future behavior? No? Well that's generally how the world works.

There's been 13 seasons since 1988-89 where the Art Ross winner had 120 or more points, they went on to win the Hart in less than half of those seasons. I don't know about you but 6 out of 13 does not sound all that reaffirming to me.

Now eliminate the seasons in which the Art Ross winner’s team missed the playoffs.

He has shown some improvements, but I won't put the cart before the horse, I want to see these improvements last well into next season rather than change my opinion on a small sample size VS. what we've seen from him year in and year out prior

If Austin Matthews wins the Hart this year (and yes, I know he likely will because of the story), it further destroys the credibility of the award. Between Matthews winning when there are 5 others who should be on the ballot ahead of him McDavid, Shesterkin, Kaprizov. Gaudreau, Josi), and Taylor Hall winning a couple of years ago due to the narrative of it, the award that was once the most important individual award the NHL has is quickly becoming a joke.

Nobody aside from a few Oilers homers who think it’s McDavid’s God given right to win the Hart every year are going to look at a 60 goal, 100+ point season in which 51 of those goals were scored in a 50 game stretch and think the Hart is tainted or is losing credibility. Talk about copium.

I do as well. I think that a competent coach and better scoring depth will help McD continue his progression. It makes a huge difference when you aren't 1 of 2 guys out of 12 that can score.

But, we will see.

Im with you on that...if any of McD , AM, Josi, Gaudreau, Heubs, or Shesty win it would be a deserving win....just so many good options.

Had Matthews tied McDavid in points (or even been within the top three) this would be a great call out. Instead, it just makes the case for why the sixth-place points leader shouldn’t win anything but the Richard. Good work.
AM34 is best goal scorer in the World and a DOMINANT 200 ft player. Complete player. Not just a pile of secondary assists padded in the weakest division in the NHL.

Is this the new HF catchphrase replacing "triggered"?

Nobody thinks McDavid has a God given right to the Hart. But he earned it again.

Awards aren't handed out based upon pace, or "what ifs" though. I think back to 2012 when Landeskog won the Calder over Nugent Hopkins, despite Nugent Hopkins having the exact same number of points in 20 fewer games. Landeskog was fully deserving of that award based upon what he accomplished, not what someone else didn't because they missed time.

And I'm not saying that Matthews isn't deserving of winning the award, I'm just saying that the missed time shouldn't be seen as a positive thing to help his case.
Good post. Missing games hurts a player's Hart Trophy chances, rather than improving them.
