Be careful with how highly you tout Matthews.

If this “good” team who has Matthews, a player who in your words elevates the Leafs to Cup contender status, I hope you’ll understand when he is crucified if he has a lackluster performance after potting 60 goals in the regular season where he seems to be the front runner for the Hart, and the Leafs get bounced in the opening round yet again.

You can’t have your cake and eat it too, but by god how most of you Leafs acolytes will try.
The Leafs play in the powerhouse Atlantic division and are playing the back to back Stanley Cup Champion Lightning!

Not the Pacific where they get spoon fed the Kings lol. Come on now.

The Hart Memorial Trophy is an annual award given "to the player adjudged to be the most valuable to his team." The winner is selected in a poll of the Professional Hockey Writers' Association in all NHL cities at the end of the regular season.

If you go by that definition then it has to be either Josi or Shesterkin. I doubt New York or Nashville makes the playoffs without them. The sad thing is that this award is usually given to the player that's considered most valuable to the media.

funny that for most of all HF Boards poster lifetimes the Hart winner has almost never exactly fit the "criteria" of this definition but yet it keeps getting trotted out year after year.

It's more often than not the "best forward award" as there is a best Dman and a best goalie award and there is nothing wrong with that.

One of those rare years when several suitable cantidates could win it, and it wouldn't shock me.

I voted McD as an Oiler homer, but I'm mostly expecting it to go to Matthews.

If Josi or Shesh win it, I wouldn't be shocked either.

Main surprises for me would be if Huberdeau or Gaudreau win it. Just think a winger should need to win the Art Ross to win it (unless the Ross winner isn't on a playoff team like the year Hall won it).

I’d be totally fine with either of Matthews or McDavid winning. I’d even be fine with Josi.
For me, if it’s a forward Matthews and McDavid have the strongest cases and honestly either one would be wholly deserving.

Unless Matthews cures cancer there's a group here that will drone on about it endlessly (and even if he does they still will). Let's do us all a favor and hop off the horse.

Roman Josi gets my vote. Say he was out for the season, Vegas would've taken that final playoff spot. I also don't think Duchene hits 40 goals.

Gaudreau and McDavid's teams probably miss without them too.

Toronto still easily makes playoffs without Matthew's. He should not even be in the conversation.

No player should ever be in the running, give it to the best goalie, they are by far the most important.

How does Matthew's have a strong case? He is way below McDavid and Gaudreau in points...

I'm not a time travler so I can't tell you the future but there's one thing I know for sure no matter who wins...

So much salt going to pour in here when the results are finally announced.

I mean, so is 120 points.

Since the 05-06 lockout there have been 5 120 point seasons and 3 60 goal seasons. McDavid's 123 points is good for third since 05-06. Matthew's 60 goals is good for second since 05-06.

Isn't Matthews the 3rd scoring 60 goals since 05-06, with Stamkos scoring 60 in 2012

What are your thought on Mcdavid being swept by a mediocre Jets team after winning the Hart last season.
