Acting like a goof is his thing.

I suspect the over-reaction will just embolden him further.
Maybe. Agitators like him who play on the edge cross the line sometimes. The best agitators toe the line but if you don’t cross the line you’ll never learn where the line is. I’d think his vets would pull him aside and explain the code. Lesson learned hopefully.

if the NHL wants to be taken seriously about head contact they should suspend him 5+ games. There really is not excuse Reilly can make. End of game, unsuspecting player, direct head contact.
Have they ever wanted to be taken seriously? They have the Arizona Coyotes ffs

Morgan fed the kid some lumber, no harm done. 3-4 games was my initial thought but in person would suggest 5-6. I’d say that’s too stiff but worth it in the end.

The Ottawa kid learned a lesson, act like an idiot and you’ll get popped. By the sounds of it, the vets on Ottawa will give him some advice going forward. I’m sure he won’t act like a goof again
The only less Grieg learned is that he needs to clap bombs into the Leafs empty net more often.

The update is not all that surprising, given It's hard to see Rielly getting anything less than 6 games when a precedent was recently set on the Perron crosscheck.

I am not sure a distinction will be made of Perron's actions were in reaction to an injured teammate Larkin, and Rielly's was to a slap shot into an empty net. If so, Rielly may get even more games than Perron.

Vets will likely buy him drinks for getting Rielly suspended. Next time he’ll probably try to provoke Matthews or Marner into getting suspended.

Well the players selected him as player of the game, so I’m not so sure.

As a fan of the kid, I acknowledge that he’s at risk of getting hurt at some point, but he’s not the kind of guy to dial it back.

Man, to be a fly on the wall of that hearing...

Rielly: I feel like Greig deserves a significant part of the blame here.

DOPS: Why?

Rielly: He took a slapshot on an empty net.

DOPS: Ok?

Rielly: It's harder than a wrist shot, see. Well, not this time it wasn't, but sometimes it can be. Can't you see the danger that comes with a shot that can be harder than a wrist shot, but actually wasn't, when there's no one in nets?

DOPS: ...

Rielly: ... the sound is scary, I went into fight or flight.

There are unwritten rules of hockey and likely in all sports. They may be dumb to you, but the players know them and you cross that line when you want to get some shit going.

So you were good with the Bertuzzi punch and the Mcsorley slash? Those guys they injured just shouldn't have broken the code? I'm old school, I was in a ton of hockey fights during my playing days and think the modern game lacks intensity due to some of the measures they've taken in the name of player safety.

The "code" stipulates that Reilly should have either fought him on the spot or taken his number and done it in another game (or laid him out with a hit). Not chase him down and cross check him in the head. That's dirty shit, it's always been dirty shit, and it's especially dirty shit in the modern NHL.

You should reread what I posted.

Where did I say what he did, crosschecking him in the face is fine ? You fixated on one point and completely missed it.

I'd say come back when you get it, but if you get there's no need to come back.

Hmm. I think he should be suspended too. But…

Your passion wasn’t in the Perron suspension or the Gallagher suspension and…

You didnt think Dillon should have gotten any suspension for his primary headshot that he got 3 games for.

Why is this one different?

No, but calculated acts with known potential to cause serious injury are more serious than those that happen in the spur of the moment. It's why we have different categories for murder and assault, and the more serious are those involving calculation and/or intent. Cross checking a guy you're in a scrum with or who is crashing the front of the net is different from chasing him down after he scores a goal and hitting him in the side of the head. Anyone with half a brain understands this.

You are slow.

I’m not condoning MO’s action. I believe he should punished severely. What I am saying is head shots are head shots regardless of when they occur.

They all could cause severe injury regardless of intent. And it is precisely this lack of consistency and understanding of what is acceptable or not is what causing players to use the cross check to the head.

Make the offense black and white nobody will think twice about doing it.

You think Dops is able to have a coherent conversation?
