Morgan fed the kid some lumber, no harm done. 3-4 games was my initial thought but in person would suggest 5-6. I’d say that’s too stiff but worth it in the end.

The Ottawa kid learned a lesson, act like an idiot and you’ll get popped. By the sounds of it, the vets on Ottawa will give him some advice going forward. I’m sure he won’t act like a goof again

The only less Grieg learned is that he needs to clap bombs into the Leafs empty net more often.

The update is not all that surprising, given It's hard to see Rielly getting anything less than 6 games when a precedent was recently set on the Perron crosscheck.

I am not sure a distinction will be made of Perron's actions were in reaction to an injured teammate Larkin, and Rielly's was to a slap shot into an empty net. If so, Rielly may get even more games than Perron.

Well the players selected him as player of the game, so I’m not so sure.

As a fan of the kid, I acknowledge that he’s at risk of getting hurt at some point, but he’s not the kind of guy to dial it back.

There are unwritten rules of hockey and likely in all sports. They may be dumb to you, but the players know them and you cross that line when you want to get some shit going.

The "code" stipulates that Reilly should have either fought him on the spot or taken his number and done it in another game (or laid him out with a hit). Not chase him down and cross check him in the head. That's dirty shit, it's always been dirty shit, and it's especially dirty shit in the modern NHL.

No, but calculated acts with known potential to cause serious injury are more serious than those that happen in the spur of the moment. It's why we have different categories for murder and assault, and the more serious are those involving calculation and/or intent. Cross checking a guy you're in a scrum with or who is crashing the front of the net is different from chasing him down after he scores a goal and hitting him in the side of the head. Anyone with half a brain understands this.

They all could cause severe injury regardless of intent. And it is precisely this lack of consistency and understanding of what is acceptable or not is what causing players to use the cross check to the head.
