Well, there's no argument from me that grieg purposely raised the temperature. I just don't think that's justification for a guy to come at him with his lumber in hand.

I don't want the perceived amount of hot dogging to enter into the conversation when punishing a guy because that becomes a slippery slope.
Exactly. You lose all credibility when you take cheap shots. Especially those brought on not by any egregious action of even any physical contact.

As soon as Reilly did what he did, it didn't matter what Greig did. Completely irrelevant.

These Toronto talking heads are out of control. Dude chases a player down across the ice a la Dale Hunter and tries to label him with a high cross check, and they think that should be a fine? He wasn't seriously injured, so no big deal? He didn't actually hit him square in the head, so it shouldn't be much of anything? Do you think McSorley was actually aiming for Brashear's head? Was Bertuzzi actually trying to break Moore's neck? They too were upset about another player "breaking the code."

In an ideal world, you punish the act, not the result. This was completely unnecessary, took conscious thought to execute, and happened well outside of the flow of play. The other "comparables" I've seen people like Biron referring to over the past season ACTUALLY OCCURRED DURING THE PLAY. You don't just get to chase people down and attack them with a weapon after the game is over because your feelings are hurt, not without significant punishment. He should be suspended for six to eight games IMO. Yes, he had more of a history, but Dale Hunter got 21 for his play on Turgeon (which was too much), and he wasn't even close to targeting the head with his stick.

If the act is what is punishable, do you agree that all cross checks to the head are punishable. There should be no proviso for “occurred during the play”.

Turgeon was out cold after that, Grieg barely felt it. There's a difference.
