I understand the Dale hunter comparison to an extent, but I think there were a couple factors that make them quite different:
1) Bettman was the new guy in town, and was probably extra sensitive to hockey's public image, and he wanted to make a statement. 70 year old bettman probably isn't as bold.
2) Dale Hunter had a well earned perception of being a guy who plays over the edge, and all that history is something reilly does not have.
It will be really interesting to see what they come up with because it does feel like uncharted waters.
Regardless of reilly's intentions, it's just a bad look because he went after an unsuspecting player after the play was already dead, and he hurt him.
