Elite players can also be poor fits when talking about team construction, which this is ultimately about.
I can accept that line of argument. Not accepting that he doesnt shoot, he cant shoot, he cant skate...etc etc.

I could give you a long list of names .. Mitchell Stephens destroyed him in playoffs .. Whitey took him hard at Beanpot championship.. you guys can make excuses for him all day long but you have not seen him long enough to know .. i know i was there in rink either coaching or watching as a parent .. but continue on with your narrative as a fan .. but don't worry it is not gonna change and most hockey people who live at rinks know it

Mitch Marner matured later than his peers, different muscle groups. Mitch Stephens and Mcdavid had similar skating ability at the minor midget level, not sure why u are go after Mitch Marners skating , lol. Look at how Joseph Mizzi was viewed in minor bantam or bantam vs Jordan Kyrou...one of them peaked at 14, the other is still developing. Players develop at different rates.

Mitch Marner has great edge work and agility but relatively poor separation speed, explosive acceleration and lower body strength. He can dart around but what holds him back in the comparison with a Patrick Kane or a Sebastian Aho is he can’t slow down, draw in a defender and then escape at speed. That’s why you see him cut off from the play so much and why he’s not respected on the power play half wall.

I agree with this, minus poor separation speed. Tavares represents poor separation speed.

Stumpy was not even close to McJesus in speed dude please .. Stumpy was faster than Stromy but nowhere even remotely close to McJesus .. Mitch in a flat out speed race down ice has always been and always will be between Stumpy and Stromy .. at NHL level that is somewhat below average on speed .. as I have told Paul on many occasions Mitch needs to lengthen his stride by get greater extension in his hips .. he needs to move away from family skating instructor friend and move to Barb .. Hunters had same issue too in London

Yup. We'll take your word over the top scouts in the world and his successes in the OHL and NHL.

You should talk to one of Hunter boys yourself .. i don't know who these top scouts are you are referring too are .. but no one I know has ever said Mitch is fast (he never has been ever) sh*t even Mitch himself knows he is below avg .. he has great edges and can turn in a phone booth which is why he can play when play slows down in either end

No one I know talks incessantly about skating speed against the speed demons called the habs as a reason that a team might be unsuccessful in the playoffs.

Not every build is going to be the “right” build.
That’s nobody’s fault. You don’t know until you keep watching beyond regular season and into the playoffs.
If we are seeing anything, it’s that it’s not a good idea to spend half the cap on 4 forwards leaving you little to work with beyond.
Also you only need a couple of high end guys and a strong team of blue collar skill work ethic.
You have Point,Kucherov,Hedman. They didn’t need Stamkos.

Crosby,Malkin,Letang
Toews,Kane,Keith
Right now the high skill are Barzal,Eberle,Leddy.

So make your choices. Find a solid D anchor.
Is it Matthews/Nylander or Matthews/Marner?

Build a solid hard core team around it.

An honest argument of fit is a worthy discussion. I don't take issue with that at all.
The lazy hot takes add zero.

It is not just Mitch team is full of guys who don't have separation speed .. our speedsters Kerfoot, Mik, Rielly and Willy unfortunately have many other skills sets lacking .. there are only so many MACs in NHL (and even he went home) .. da biggest issues with team is CAP and player mix .. there is a reason Gilles Trots and Boss and Shutt Lemaire and Lafleur and Tik Gretz and Kurri all worked .. one guy to open up ice, dig and net front presence - one guy to makes plays and one guy with speed with a rocket finish ..
Zach Matty and Mitch don't dominate - why? It is too slow .. mitch can dish wiith da best, Matty can shoot better than anyone and Zach digs with da best yet line does not work .. again it is TOO SLOW to separate itself

If Stumpy is Mitchell Stephens, than u are in correct. Stephens was as explosive as it gets at minor midget level. Dylan Strome shouldnt be in this convo, a below average skater his whole life and continues to be. Mitch didnt have any linemates on Don Mills, he had Dunda i recall the big boy, Mitch dominated with hockey sense. I under estimated Marner's hockey sense until I saw him with St Mikes Buzzers.

Might have been one of his buddies who he missed sooooooo much he was on the tee less then 16 hours after losing.

He must have been sore playing 7 games in 12 nights. Who am I kidding... he had that tee of booked after game 5. Shooting pucks out of the rink, not digging for pucks and trying to use his feet rather then one time pucks in the net.

When the chips are down, I am choosing Kadri over Mitch Napkin Marner.

I hope people let him know how disappointed they are with him.

Yes, I love watching Mitch end to end Marner try to dance around 5 players at the blue line while his line mates are waiting to gain the zone so that they can poke the puck off his stick.

So many times, all they had to do was dump and chase but this team refuses to play that way.. I think guys started going offside on him purposly because they.... wouldnt dump it into the corner. We all know he loves to flip the puck.... just only inside his own blue line.

Say what you want about Kadri, but Marners 5 DOG penalties are worse then Kadri.

What a bum.

Well it really isnt that easy anyways. we got Tavares on a full NTC so he's going no where

Then if we move say Nylander, we obviously are going to get a player in return. unless were going for straight futures which doesnt really help us. so how much of his basically 7m are we going to save on?

So it kind of comes down to who do we move? Matthews or Marner?

The obvious answer is move Marner over Matthews right?
But what if Matthews really does want out? I get the feeling Marner will be a life time Leaf if given the chance.
end up in 3 years without Matthews And Marner....

I honestly have no clue what the answer is here. I cant see any trade where we trade Matthews/Marner and get better.
not sure if moving Nylander will solve anything either.

Marner interviews are cringe...sounds very inexperienced, says all the wrong things. Sounds like a kid trying to sound like a veteran.

One of my favorites:

Siegal: "What it's like trying to manage the pressure to produce as the series move along there..is it kind of alot."

Mitch: " I think Austin and I....and the other guys.. come playoffs you wanna be the guy to lead the team out of a series..."

First he talks about himself and Matthews...then includes the "other guys" ...then talks about wanting to individually be the guy to lead a team. Guess he hasn't heard the phrase "there is no I in team". Dubas sure messed up the team first identity Lou worked hard to implement.

Marner turned in to a disappointment. Does nothing in the Playoffs because he’s to scrawny, weak, slowed down and has zero jam because of that combo of stagnant.

Matthews no better

One of the most talented wingers we've had in a very long time. Sadly, at 10.9M it's hard to see us winning a cup for what he brings. That kind of pay means you don't need several years to figure out your confidence or how to win in the playoffs. That's proven winner cash. We took a gamble and lost and I really hope we move on.
