A bridge deal can go 1 of 2 ways, either increases a players value, or decreases. If Marner got a 2-3 year bridge deal, he likely gets the same as Nylander who is making 7 million, if not more because he puts up a lot more points. So if he were to negotiate a contract this summer, he likely gets at least 9 million anyway and we're still at basically the same place we are today. No one bases their contracts off the playoffs, an 82 game period is a far greater sample size of how good a player is, instead of 7 games.

Yes... but if it goes up, at least you know what you're buying.

He spent all of last offseason working on his shot and "shooting mentality", his shot got 5% better but his confidence in using it in bad spots went 95% up. At this rate he'll be shooting more than Ovi soon.
And scoring less then Marincin

But we arent in the same position today if he signs a bridge....we would have way more info to make whatever decision we wanted at that point. If he signs for 7 like you stated thats an extra 4 mill to spend elsewhere during that bridge and if he signs for 9 after the bridge its still an extra 2 mill a year. And now we would have an idea what he actually brings to the table instead of gambling on it. He would still get paid well based on his regular season numbers like you said maybe 9 but I dont think he gets 11 anymore, even from dubas. Even if he is lights out in the playoffs during the bridge you think he gets more than 11 at that point. I just dont see any downside to bridging him.Way better situation to be in imo.

Agreed 100%. Marner hasn’t shown up in the playoffs for 3 years now……no way in hell he gets 11 million

Would you sign Marner at $9 million per on a bridge? That's how greedy he is...Marner wanted $9 million on a bridge deal...the guy wanted his cake and eat it too...which is pathetic compared to the $6.75 million Point accepted from Tampa on his bridge...I don't think he's a player the Leafs need to take them to the next level...he seems to care more about being a celebrity with all the riches and attention rather than being a great hockey player, especially in the playoffs.

Dubas should've played hardball with Mitch but he was jaded from the Nylander negotiation. Oh well, that's what we get for letting a rookie GM handle the most important contract negotiations in this franchises history.

This team is sad...these players got all the money, and as I continue to watch these playoff games, you see all these other players making much less laying it all down the line game in and game out...it's pathetic...up 3-1 in the series and they couldn't even muster the drive and desperation to score the first goal in any of the remaining 3 games, letting the Habs take 3-0, 2-0 and 3-0 leads to lose the series...look what Tampa did to the Islanders tonight...they completely destroyed them...you would think the Leafs would have it in them to at least put their foot down in one of the 3 games...nope...and then to lay an egg in game 7 at home in front of some fans for the first time in a long time. The young core is rotten, a bunch of narcissists, and Mitch is a big one...at least he's great at posting IG pics of his vacation spots for everyone to see.

True but lets not pretend an experienced GM would have done better. Maybe our 2 stars are just spoiled all though it's mainly Marner in this case.

Marner's contract is so obviously the worst of the bunch. If I had to list the issues with each big contract:

Tavares at $11 million: In a vaccuum this contract and the negotiations are not too much issue, he was a UFA and we all figured that the final years wouldn't be the best but that's normal. It'll be the same for guys like Panarin, Pietrangelo, etc. He's still produced at a a great to elite level so far and seems to be ageing well durability wise. This contract should've been the ceiling for the others.

Nylander at $6.9 million: About 500K overpaid but he's shown he can perform close to what his contract demands and he's easily the best value compared to everyone else. The length of the negotiations optically though were brutal, and hurt Nylander's play in 18-19. And probably weakened the Leafs position when taking on Matthews' and Marner's agents.

Matthews at $11.640 million: Term is f***ing awful. If it's an 8 year contract I doubt anyone has too much issue with this. Ideally he would have Eichel's AAV or at least make no higher than $500K more but whatever. He's a Rocket and Hart contender year in and year out going forward, but he should be signed for longer.

Marner at $10.9 million: Brutally overpaid for riding shotgun with two elite centres. Marner is a fantastic playmaker (in the regular season) sure but goals are valued higher. Backstrom didn't make the same amount as Ovechkin, everyone knew who drove that duo. But Marner deluded himself into thinking he was just as important as this teams top pivots and forced the team to recognize him as such with this contract. If the rumours from his negotiation are true I honestly can't believe this team even offered $11 million over 8 years. So what the $100K saved made us lose two free agent years? My God.

Marner sucks. Years of ZERO playoffs production is proof. Nylander however with NO Tavares and many different C's still scored goals. Marners regulars season stats are all fluff and no substance.

YOU GIVE IT A REST DUDE!
I didnt ask to send in the clowns, child.

Matthews was better than Marner. If Marner’s performance was the measuring stick for what’s an acceptable performance, we’re screwed. The fact of the matter is that it’s 5 post seasons in, and they’ve both failed to play to their standards and abilities far more often then not.

Absolutely both spineless cowards until they raise their level of play when games matter and opponents bring max effort every shift, like true superstar winners do. We need then to find another gear, not struggle to maintain something close to their own gear.

Wont ever forget Mathews smiling face while being ragged dolled by a Habs player ..... I ve never seen anything like this in all my years of Hockey and hope I never see this again from any player in the League ... Its the playoffs man , not a fin gents league game .... Look at the Warriors still playing , cuts , sprains , breaks, bumps , .... These guys ( M&M ) just dont have a clue what it takes to win in playoffs . They dont get it !

This is exactly how I feel about this group right now and all the smoke and mirrors with selective stats will never change my mind

It was an embarrassing moment for Leaf fans and just shows their lack of commitment or caring

I thought he was going to go beast mode at the time, so I excused it. Looking back now, yeah f***ing embarrassing as f***.

This upcoming year is the rubber hits the road for Marner. This year above all he is taking the heat for his playoff play. The crosshairs are squarely on him. If he is there this year I assume he will have almost another 100 point season if playing with Matthews.

Question will be does he understand what he needs to do to breakthru in the playoffs, if he does then Leafs will have a motivated Marner. If he is soft mentally which I tend to lean towards he will put up numbers in the regular season and come playoffs fizzle out again and be moved.

I would almost have him on the 3rd line and let him drive a line alone. See if he can do it vs riding shotgun with Tavares and or Matthews. If he can carry a 3rd line that will add to a deep Leafs team that can roll out 4 lines. Get 2 guys with size and skill to play with and see if he can back it up.
